teamsas well. In 1958she wasnamed
GWUSportsGirl of the Year and wasalso
awardedthe SeniorWomen’sCup as out-
standingathleteintheclass.Shewasan
activeparticipantin the RestonTennisAs-
sociationand wonanumberof titlesin the
NorthernVirginiaTennisLeague.Herlove
of sportscontinuedthroughouther life and
propelledher to successin the NationalSe-
nior Olympics,first as agold medalistin the
javelinin 1997,and thenin 1999as ateam
goldmedalistwiththe GoldenGirlsSoftball
teamwhereshe playedthirdbaseand was
namedMostValuablePlayer.Wellintoher
seventiesBarbaraplayedpickleballbefore
mostpeopleevenknewwhatit was.She
wonnumerousregionalcompetitionsand
placedfourthat the 2015NationalSenior
Gamesat the age of 78. All her life Barbara
was an avid sportsfan as well as participant,
andralliedbehindtheNationalsandthe
Washington FootballTeam/Commanders.
Whenshe had time,she also lovedwatching
televisedtennisand golf tournaments.
Barbarawas equallyat homeon the sports
fieldor at ablack-tiegala.Alifelonglover
of the arts,she sharedher passionfor op-
era, musicaltheatreand cinemawithher
childrenandgrandchildren.Whethershe
wasattendingasportingeventoramusical
performance,Barbaranevermissedagame
or aconcertand providedunwaveringsup-
port and encouragementto her childrenand
grandchildrenin pursuingtheirpassions.
Knownfor her magneticpersonality,Bar-
barawastheconsummatehostess.Family
and friendswill missher gregariousnature
andwonderfulsenseof humor.Barbara
wasalsoknownfor her firmconvictions
againstsocialinjustice.She foughtfor fair
housing,rallied for politicalcandidateswho
sharedher views,and marchedagainst
warandgunviolenceinsupportofcauses
dearto her heart.Mostof all, Barbarawas
knownas alovingmotherand grandmother
whoputherfamilybeforeallelse.
Barbarawas precededin deathby Richard
Jamborsky(2015)andsisterJanBaldauf
Sneed(2019). She is survivedby children
Michael(Margaret),Reston,VA;Richard,Bal-
timore,MD; and Daniel(Courtney),Reston,
VA;andfourgrandchildren,Ellie,Laura,Sail-
or,and Henry.Also, brotherLaurenceBal-

House,Alexandria,died on April28, 2022
fromcomplicationsof Alzheimer’sdisease.
Danwasbornin Belmont,Massachusetts
and,afterhis familymovedto the DC area,
he graduatedfromGeorgetownPrepin
1953.He graduatedfromthe Universityof
Virginia,wherehe wasmemberof Sigma
Chi, in 1957;the Universityof VirginiaLaw
School,wherehe was amemberof the Vir-
giniaLaw Review,in1960; and HarvardBusi-
nessSchoolin 1963.
Dan beganhis legalcareerwiththe Depart-
mentof Commercewherehe receivedthe
SilverMedalAward in 1966for his workin
creatingthe Departmentof Transportation.
Whenhe becamepresidentof The Food and
DrugLaw Institute,hefoundhis real talent
helpingcompaniesnavigatethe complex
worldof foodand druglaw.His testimony

as an expertbeforeCongressin 1982on
tamperresistantdrugpackagingcontrib-
utedto the passingof “theTylenolbill.”He
continuedhisfoodanddruglawcareeras
partnerin the law firm of Wald, Harkrader&
Rossand at the ConsumerHealthProducts
Association.He retiredfromthe Consumer
HealthProductsAssociationas SeniorVice
Presidentand General Councilin 1998.One
of Dan’sgreatpleasureswasmentoring
andofferingadviceto youngerbusiness
associatesas theyprogressedin theirown
careers.
Dan’suniqueabilityto bringpeoplewith
diverseand strongviewsto consensusfor
commongoalsmadehis volunteerworkin-
valuable.Heservedon the Boardof Advisors
at the NationalBankof Washingtonand the
Boardof the Stabler-LeadbeaterApothecary
Shop,and was atreasurerof The LittleThe-
atre of Alexandriafor several years.Hewas
amemberof the DC and VirginiaBar Asso-
ciationsand the Bar of the U.S. Supreme
Court.
He is survivedby his wifeof 65 years,San-
draSmithO’Keefe;childrenVickiE. O’Keefe
(GordonIvins),TimothyJ. O’Keefe(Marian-
na);fivegrandchildrenMeghanO’Keefe,
TimothyColinO’Keefe(Amy),Erin O’Keefe,
Kelly Ivins-O’Keefe and Delaney Ivins-

cia Neibel.
His childrenare thankfulfor his sageadvice
