He was bornon February27, 1932,in Cleve-

(1958),and the Cleveland-MarshallCollege
of Law (1961).
Jamesservedhis countryfor morethan 20
yearsin boththe militaryand as an elect-
ed officialservingthe peopleof Cleveland,
Ohio.Heenlistedin the UnitedStatesAir
Force from 1950 to 1954duringthe Korean
War. Hiscareeras an electedofficialbegan
in 1959as amemberof the ClevelandCity
Councilwherehe servedfrom 1959 to 1970
and servedas presidentfrom 1964 to 1970.
James was thenelectedto the UnitedStates
Houseof Representativesin 1970for the
92ndCongressand serveduntil1977.
Afterhis politicalcareer,Jamespracticed
law in Washington,D.C. from 1977 to 1981.
In 1981,he joinedthe DelawareNorthCom-
paniesin Buffalo,New York wherehe served
as executivevice presidentuntil1988.From

1988 untilhis retirement,Jamesresumed
his legalpracticeand continuedhis support
of politicalcandidatesin local,state,and na-

and darkat nightthat afterhis impoverished
sharecropperparentsturnedoff theirsole
oil lamp,the onlyvisiblelightswerethose
of fireflies.Hewas the fourthchildof eight
whosurvivedto adulthood;anothersister
died in childhoodbecausehis parentscould
not affordto takeher to adoctor.
Afterthe familywas kickedoff theirtenant
farmby the finca’snew ownerwhenBasilio
was agedeight,theymovedto CampoFlori-
do,thenaprosperousmarkettownnear
the beachtownof Guanaboabout15 or
so milesfromdowntownHavana.He grew
tall,strong,energetic,and totallybored
withschooland,to his mother’sdismay,
he droppedout beforeevengraduatingel-
ementaryschool. He workedin construc-
tion like his fatherand brothers.Inthe late
1950s,hegot his bestjob,workingon con-
structionprojectsfor ShellOil.
As a15year old, butclaimingto be old-
er,Basiliojoinedthe rebellionagainstthe
dictatorFulgencioBatistawho,in1952,
perpetratedacoup d’etatagainstthe duly
elected(albeitcorrupt)governmentof Pres-
identCarlosPrio.Basiliowas amemberof
the Directorio(student/worker)Party which
led the fightagainstBattistain Havanaand
otherurbanareas.Directorio’scharismatic
leaderswerekilledby Batista’sforces,en-
ablingFidelCastroto assumeleadershipof
the CubanRevolution.Mostsurvivingmem-
bersof Directoriowerepro-democracy and
anti-communistand wereamongthe first
to recognizethat FidelCastrohad become
Cuba’sdictatorand intendedto makeCuba
aclientstateof the SovietUnion.In 1961,
Basilioalongwithotherformeranti-Batista
membersof Directoriojoinedthe counter
revolutionagainstFidelCastro.
In 1962,Basiliowasarrestedandsubse-
quentlyspent22 yearsas apoliticalpris-
oner.Hewas first heldin La Cabana,the
formerSpanishdungeonat the entryto Ha-
vanaharbor.Later he spentprisontimein
the forcedlaborcampon the Isle of Pines,
in Combinadodel Este Prisonon the military
basenearHavana,and manylongyearsin
solitaryconfinementin acell withbarred
windowsBoniato,aprisonnearSantiago
de Cuba.Earlyon, Basiliobecamea“plan-
tado”,the namegivento politicalprisoners
who refusedto repudiatetheiroppositionto
the Castroregimeand go to re-education
campsand whospentmanyyearsdressed

onlyin underwearbecausetheyrefusedto
wearthe sameuniformas commoncriminal
prisonersratherthanbeingrecognizedas
politicalprisoners.
WhenBasiliobecameapoliticalprisoner,his
two youngdaughterswereaged3and three
months.His wifedivorcedhim.He did not
see his elderdaughteragainuntilshe was
15 yearsold, holdingher newlybornson in
her armsand did not see his youngerdaugh-
ter untilhe was affordedabrief reunionat
the airportwhenhe was aboutto leavefor
the U.S. His and otherpoliticalprisoners’ef-
fortsto bringfamilywiththemto the U.S.
wereunsuccessfuluntilovertwentyyears
laterhe wasableto sponsorhis younger
daughterand her daughterfor legalimmi-
grationto the U.S.
In 1984,Basiliowasamong26 Cubanpo-
liticalprisonersreleasedto the custodyof
the ReverendJesseJackson.All had been
heldat leasttwoyearsbeyondthe com-
pletionof theirprisonsentences.Amnesty
Internationaland otherhumanrightsorga-
nizationscalledattentionto Cuba’slack of
internationaltreatycomplianceand the Cu-
ban governmentdecidedto releaseBasilio
and otherswhosecontinuedimprisonment
violatedinternationallaw on conditionthat
theyacceptimmediateexileto the U.S. or
othercountries.
Afterarrivingin the U.S. at age47, Basilio
Guzmanworked constructionand then
startedhis ownsmallbusinessas acarpen-
ter/homerenovator.Heretiredin 2018at
age80.Afterspendinghisfirstyearinthe
U.S. in Miami, Basilio movedto Washington,
DC in 1985and thento ArlingtonVA in 1997.
He is survivedby his wifePamelaDoty,
whomhe marriedin 1987,andthreedaugh-
ters:AracelysGuzmanof CampoFlorido,
HavanaProvince,Cuba,MariaEsterGuz-
manof Miami,Florida,bothdaughtersborn
in Cubaof his first marriageand Elizabeth
Guzman,sole daughterof his secondmar-
riage,born in the U.S.,who currentlyresides
in Los Angeles,CA. He is alsosurvivedby
four grandchildrenbornin Cubanowliving
in the U.S.,sevengreatgrandchildrenall but
one bornin the U.S. and one great,great

Dr.Paul K. Strudlerpassedawayon April22,
2022 in NorthBethesda,Maryland.Bornin
NewYork City,and raised in Ellenvillein the
Catskills,Paul, aradiation physicist,was an
extraordinary manwhoseunquenchable
pursuitof knowledgewasinspiringto all
whoknewhim.Paul will be remembered
for his brilliantmind,greatsenseof humor
and sharpwit whichwerepresentin every
aspectof his life.
Paul madeanamefor himselfat an early
age as classvaledictorian,with EleanorRoo-
seveltas the guestspeaker.Hecontinued
his educationat Rensselaer(R.P.I.) and Yale
for his Mastersand Ph.D.Paul was aco-dis-
covererof neutrondefiantisotopesof the
elementBariumand was awardedaNation-
al Postdoctoral Fellowshipat Harvardwhere
he taughtfor several yearsbeforeeventu-
ally landinghis dreamjobsat the National
Institutesof Health.
At the NationalInstitutesof Healthas Spe-
cial Assistantto the Chiefof NuclearMed-
icine,Dr. Strudlerwaspresentedthe N.I.H.
Director’sAwardfor “initiative,creativity
and determinationwhichhad broughtcy-
clotrontechnologyto N.I.H. andcontributed
significantly to the implementationof Posi-
tron EmissionTomography(P.E.T.) research.”
In 1990,he was appointedas ScientificRe-
viewAdministratorof the N.I.H. Radiation

StudySection,supervisingthe peerreviews
of grant proposalsfor radiationtreatment
of cancer.Highlyregardedin his fieldof ex-
pertise,nuclearmedicine,Paul was beloved
by his studysectionparticipants.Henever
tiredof supporting,encouraging,and assist-
ing othersto help furthertheircareersin the
worldof science;and his captivatingscien-
tific speecheswerelegendarythroughout
the N.I.H. Scientificcommunity,and beyond,
for integratinghis humorwithscience.
Paul cultivatedandtreasuredhis lifelong
friends.Hewas an originalpeopleperson
whobecamequickfriendswithwhomever
he met.Paul was avoraciousreader,reading
several booksat onceon avarietyof topics
and was knownas awalkingencyclopedia
longbeforeAlexiaand Siri appearedon the
scene.Hewas an accomplishedtennisand
squashplayerwhocouldbe foundon the
courtsyear-round.Paul wasalsoawine
collectorand connoisseur,anavid gardener
and aloverof all musicfromsymphonies
to zydeco.Paul enjoyed traveling the world
withhis familyand spentmanyvacationsin
SantaFe and Taos.His love of the Southwest
was reflectedin theirhomewithart, music,
pottery,and magnificentcactusplants.
Afterretiring,Paul enjoyedvolunteeringat
the StrathmoreMusicCenter,the Landow
Houseand HebrewHomewiththe family’s
adorableBichonFrise,Bradley.Although
strickenwithParkinson’sDiseasefor near-
ly twentyyears,Paulcontinuedto fightit
and persevereto the very end.Paul’sloving
relativesand loyalfriendscontinuedto visit
weekly,goingout to lunchor playingscrab-
ble for yearsuntilnearlythe very end.
Paul was the belovedhusbandof his devot-
ed wife,Dyan,lovingfatherof David(Jen)

Johnwas bornin Pepperell,Massachusetts,
the second-oldestof five boysof whomthe
youngest,Raymond,surviveshim.He grew
up on the shoresof Hull beforeboardingat
LawrenceAcademyfor highschoolwhere
hewaspresidentofhisclassandcaptain
of boththe footballandbaseballteams.
SoonafterenteringBatesCollegehe was
recruitedto pitchfor the BostonRed Sox,
butturneddowntheopportunityinorderto
join the Navyin whichhe foughtin World

WarII,servingontheUSSPasadena.Hethen
returnedto Tufts Universityfromwhichhe
graduated.
Johnwillbedeeplymissedbyhisloving
threechildrenJohnChase,Jr. (Taryn),Lisa
Kaiser(Don),andJulie.Hewas blessed
withhisfourgrandchildrenRykerandFinn
Chase,MadelineandKendallKaiser,and
manyniecesand nephews,aswell as his
wonderfulrelationshipin his last yearswith

familyof children,grandchildren,and great
grandchildren.
Johnand Janmet whenbothwerein the
FBI duringJ. EdgarHoover’sadministration,
Johnas aSpecialAgent.Aftermarriage,he
enjoyedalongcareerinfinancialadvisory,
retiringat 82 yearsof age.Throughouthis
life,heplayedgolf avidlyat bothBethesda
CountryCluband ColumbiaCountryClub.
Heleavesbehindmanylifelongfriends,most
notablyhis weeklyFriday “LunchBunch”of
pals at ColumbiaCountryClub,and all those
whomarveledat his energyand zest for life
as he wasstill drivinghimselfto his daily
swim,his secondfavoritesportgoingback
to his youthby the ocean.

al Preserve.Followingher divorce,she movedto Houstonwhereshe was Supervisorof the
CancerImmunologyand OrganTransplantationLab at the M.D.AndersonHospital.She also
servedas presidentof the localSierraClub.
Her passionfor publicpolicyand the environmentled to astaff positionon the U.S. House
AgricultureCommittee,whereshe draftedthe nation’sfirst organicfarmingact. She met
her bestfriend,ElinorSchwartz,whileaLegislativeAidein the CaliforniaGovernor’sOffice.
She servedas ExecutiveDirectorof the Stateand TerritorialSolidWaste ManagementAs-
sociationand laterconsultedwithprivateclientsand the federal governmentas President
of the MarklandGroup.She also foundedand servedas ExecutiveDirectorof the Applied
BiotreatmentAssociation.
Sue met Art Day at abottlebill fundraiserat EasternMarketin 1987and soonincluded
him in her annualsnorkelingtripsto tropicalislands.They marriedin 1990beforemoving
to Knoxville,Tennessee,whereSue joinedUT’sCenterfor EnvironmentalBiotechnology
and the Energy,EnvironmentResourcesCenter.She also managedthe 1992Paul Tsongas
primarycampaignin easternTennessee.
Theymovedto San FranciscothreeyearslaterwhereSue joinedthe SystemwideBiotech-
nologyResearchand EducationProgram at the UC Berkeley.Her expertisein association
managementled to apositionas the first ExecutiveDirectorof the CaliforniaAlliancefor
Jobs,acoalitionof heavyconstructionfirmsand unionconstructionworkers,whereshe
successfullydefendedthe prevailingwageprovisionin localgovernmentcontracting.She
and Art enjoyedweekendsbikingthe Sonomaand NapaCountybackroads,watchingsea
ottersalongthe coast,hikingthe Sierras,cross-countyskiingnearDonnerPass and inter-
nationaltravel.
Sue returnedto her true passion,the nexusof microbiologyand publicpolicy,asPresident

largestclusterof biosciencecompanies.But she scaledbackafteran aorticheartvalve
replacementin 2003,aconsequenceof Type 1diabetesthat she managedsinceage 5.They
returnedto the DC areain 2007.But Sue’spassionfor publicpolicyreturnedwithaposi-
tion as Directorof CarnegieMellonUniversity’sDCOfficeof Engineeringand PublicPolicy.
Declininghealthled to her full retirementin 2009.But the DC heatand humidityresultedin
amove to an active-adultcommunityin SantaRosa,California,wherelife was greatuntil
the devastatingwildfiresof 2017.After10 daysof evacuation,theirhomewas undamaged
but theirnerveswerenot, so theyreturnedto the abundanthumidityof Virginiain 2018.
Sue wouldlightup aroomwithher Texas charmand curlyred hair whileshe workeda
cocktailparty.But the toll of diabetesand the advanceof dementiacaughtup withher.
Predeceasedby her parents,she leavesbehindArt, her lovinghusbandof 32 years;her
cherishedbrotherDaleMarklandand his wifeMelbaof Dallas;his sonsMontgomeryand
wife Elizabethof Dallas,and Douglasand partnerJane of Los Angeles;Art’snephewKieran
Hendrickand wife MartaSaporitiof London,UK; her BFF Elinorand manyfriendsand former
