grandchildren, EdwinKiernan McCaffrey
slippedawaypeacefullyduringalittle after-
noonnapatthehomeofhisdaughteron
April19, 2022in GalesFerry,CT. He was 92
yearsold.
On acold December20, 1929,in Leominster,
MA,EdwinKiernanMcCaffreywasbornto
EdwinCurryMcCaffrey,ahandsomehouse
painter,andBerniceKiernanMcCaffrey,a
lovelyIrishlass whohad arrivedfrom Coun-
ty Longfordjust sevenyearsearlier.Hewas
the oldestof theirsix childrenandoneof
scoresof McCaffreydescendantswhohave
livednearthe millsof Clinton,MAsince
six McCaffreybrotherssettledthereafter
fleeingCountyFermanaghduringIreland’s
GreatPotatoFamine.
As akid, EddieMcCaffreywasagood Cath-
olicschoolboyandanexcellentstudent.
Whenhe graduatedat the top of his St. Ber-
nard’sHigh Schoolclassin Fitchburg,MA,
thenunsandhismumencouragedhimto
go to college.So, withnot anickelto his
name,youngEdenrolledatWorcesterJu-
niorCollegeandgot ajob diggingditches
forthehighwaydepartment.Withhisditch
diggingearnings,heboughtaFord Fairlane
and transferredto the Universityof Massa-
chusetts.Daily,hedrovethatcar 50 miles
eachwayuntilhe earnedaBachelorof Sci-
encein CivilEngineeringin 1952.Then,he
wasofferedacommissionin the Coastand
GeodeticSurvey(nowtheNOAACorps)and
an adventurebeyondhis wildestdreams.
In his 30 years,Edrosefromthe rank of
EnsigntoCaptain,sailedtheAtlantic,Pa-
cific,and CaribbeanaboardNOAAresearch
vessels,predictedtsunamis,chartedour
coasts,and participated in underwater
atomictesting.Earlyon, he metapretty
collegestudentwaitressingin Plymouth,
MA for the summer.Her namewasConnie
Fischerandshehadbigplansforacarefree
summeruntilahandsomeyoungmanwith
acrookedsmileofferedher aride in that
Ford Fairlane.
Connieand Ed marriedon January2, 1956,
dancedthe nightaway,and drovesouththe
nextdaytotheirfirsthomeinSt.Peters-
burg,FL whereConnietaughtschoolwhile
Ed wasunderwayon the USC&GSSHydrog-
rapher.Theirnextstopwasthe Magnetic
ObservatoryinCorbin,VAfrom1956-1958
whentheywelcomedbabyJoanne.From
1958-1961,EdwinMcCaffreyservedas the
Officerin Charge,HonoluluMagnetic&Seis-
mologyObservatoryat Barber’sPoint,and
the youngfamilywelcomedbabyMaryEl-
len. From 1961–1963,LCDRMcCaffreywas
assignedas the OperationsOfficeraboard
the USC&GSSPioneerout of Oakland,CA,
andthe familywelcomedtheirfirstson,
James.From1963-1964,EdwinMcCaffrey
servedas the CommandingOfficerof the
NOAAShipsHilgardandWainwrightcon-
ductingwire-drag surveyoperationstogeth-
er off the EastCoastand in the Gulf of Mex-
ico.From1964-1966,LCDRMcCaffreywas
assignedto Norfolk,VA as Officerin Charge

of NOAACommissionedOfficerTraining,
andthefamilywelcomedtheiryoungest
son,Robert.In 1966,the McCaffreyfamily
headedwestto Palo AltowhereEd earned
aMasterof SciencefromStanford. Then
in1967,theroadwarriorMcCaffreyfamily
moved,again,acrossthe country,for the
last time,tosettlein Wheaton,MD whereEd
servedin numerouspositionsin NOAAHQ
in Maryland.Withthe McCaffreystill living
in Wheaton,CAPTEdwinMcCaffreyserved
onemoreunderwaytouras Commanding
OfficeroftheNOAAshipMountMitchell
surveyingthe watersoff Ponce,PuertoRico
from1970-1972.
In Wheaton,Ed and Connieimmersedthem-
selvesin raisingtheirfourkids.Edhelped
withhomework,coachedsoccer,officiated
atswimanddivingmeets,andattended
countlessschoolconcertsandpianorecit-
als.CAPTEdwinMcCaffreyretiredfromthe
NOAACorpsin 1982afterserving30 years.
Afterhangingup his uniform,Ed donneda
suit and tie to workfor OAOCorporationon
the HubbellTelescopeprojectuntilretired
onceagainin 1990. In retirement,Edwin
twiceservedas aCensusTaker for the US.
CensusBureauin 1990and 2000.
Havinggrownup duringthedepression,
Connieand Ed wereamazingsavers.They
rarelyate out or splurgedon anythingex-
ceptanannualsummervacationfortheir
children.On one suchvacationtheydiscov-
eredLakeWinnipesaukeeandWolfeboro,
NH.Thentheysplurgedonasweetlittle
housein asweetlittlelakesidecommuni-
ty.And then,to theirchildren’sshockand
amazement,theysplurgedon abrand-new
SkiSupremewaterskiboatin1982.They
reveledintakingtheirchildrenandgrand-
childrenout in the boat,but mostlyenjoyed
the peaceandquietof theirlittlesliceof
paradiseuntil,in thespringof2013,Connie
passedjust beforeEd couldtakeher north
to theirhousein the woods.Hewas left to
carryonwithoutherandcarryonhedid–
for nineyears.Hewatchedgrandchildren
marryandwelcomedeightgreatgrand-
children–delightingineach!Hespentthe
lastsixyearsinthecareofhischildrenas
Parkinson’scruellyrobbedhim of his ability
to walkand talk.He wascheerfuland never
evercomplainedandwhenhisgreatgrand-
childrenwerein the room,he wouldlight
up and musterawink, tossaball, or snap
off asalute.
Ed McCaffreywasthe firstin his familyto
go to collegeand buy acar.Hewas the only
memberof his familyto leaveMassachu-
setts.Hewas precededin deathby his wife,
Constance(Fischer)McCaffrey,and by three
of his youngersiblings,FrancisMcCaffrey,
BernardMcCaffrey,andMaureenMcCaffrey.
He is survivedby his two youngestsiblings,
BrendanJoseph“Joe”McCaffreyand Bren-
da “Chickie”McCaffreyGilhooley.Heisalso
survivedby his fourchildren:Joanne(Frank)
Albero,Mary Ellen(Kurt) Colella,JamesMc-
Caffrey,and Robert(Carla)McCaffrey;his six
grandchildren:Kimberly(Ron)Fialk,Michael
(Juli)Albero,Kathryn(Adam)Sederholt,Lau-
ra Albero,Christine(Tim)Conway,and Erin
(Jon)Coxon;and eightgreatgrandchildren:
BrendanFialk,MadelineFialk,BrittaSeder-
holt,HalleSederholt,LoreleiFialk,Elijah
Albero,Ryan Fialk,and AdamSederholt.He
defiedthe oddsby carryingon for nineyears
afterlosinghis belovedbrideof 57 years
and six yearsafterbreakinghis hip.His 92
yearswererich beyondmeasure.
Untilthe end,Ed enjoyedan eveningBour-
bonandgingerale or aManhattanwitha
goodmeal.In his memory,pleaseconsider

Ed’sfamilyand friendswill celebrate his life

Everthe aviator,Major General (Retired)Carl
HerbertMcNair,Junior,filed his finalflight
planon May2, 2022.Bornin Pensacola,
Floridaon September22, 1933,to the late
CarlHerbertMcNair,Senior,and HelenaEd-
wardsMcNair,Carl was the middlechild,the
belovednamesakeboybetweentwogirls,
the lateBettyPetreeof Pensacola,FL and
AnitaJane “Patsy”Singletaryof Birmingham,
AL.
His motherwaseagerto sendhim to school
at an earlyage whichresultedin his grad-
uationfromPensacolaHighSchoolat the
youngage of 17. He wasimmenselyproud
to haveattendedEmoryUniversityfor one
yearwherehe wasamemberof SigmaAl-
phaEpsilonfraternity,beforereceivingan
appointmentto the UnitedStatesMilitary
Academy.Comingfromanavalaviation
town,CarlironicallyattendedWest Point
fromwhichhe graduatedin 1955.Withhis
keeninterestin aviation,Carl had chosen
toenterthe Air Force followinghis USMA
graduationand had evenpurchasedhis Air
Force uniforms.However,anewlyinvigorat-
ing Armyforay into aviation,specificallyhe-
licopters,changedhis mindand he commis-
sionedas aU.S.Army 2nd Lieutenant.During
his militarycareer,inwhichhe loggedmore
than 6000 flighthours(1578of thosein
combat),he alsoreceivedaB.S.and M.S. in
AerospaceEngineeringfromGeorgiaTech
andan M.S.inPublicAdministrationfrom
ShippensburgUniversityandwasaloyal
alumto all his almamaters.
MG McNairhad along and distinguishedca-
reerof 32 yearswiththe U.S. Armywithhis
finestaccomplishmentsservingas the first
BranchChiefof ArmyAviationas wellas
havingbeenthe BrigadeCommander,Depu-
ty CommandingGeneral, and Commanding
General for the U.S. ArmyAviationCenterin
Fort Rucker,Alabama.LowerAlabama and
the Wiregrass districtremaineddearto his
heartfor the remainderof his life.
MG McNairwasthe unofficial voiceof Army
aviationfor manyyearsand heldmanylead-
ershiprolesand top officesin the American
HelicopterSociety(AHS),the ArmyAviation
Associationof America(AAAA),the Associ-
ationof the UnitedStatesArmy(AUSA),the
ArmyHistoricalFoundation,and the Nation-
al DefenseIndustrialAssociation.MG Mc-
NairwasalsoawardedmanyDepartmentof
Defensemedalsincludingthe Distinguished
ServiceMedal[2], Legionof Merit[3], Distin-
guishedFlyingCross[4], BronzeStar [2] with

Cross,Easterseals,NorthernVirginiaCham-
berof Commerce,CommunityFounda-
tionfor NorthernVirginia,andthe George
WashingtonChapterof the Associationof
the UnitedStatesArmy.Hewas adevoted
memberof bothMessiahandAldersgate
UnitedMethodistChurches.
MGMcNairwasinductedintothe Army
AviationHallof Fame in 2004.Additional
honorswhichdelightedhim werebeingthe
2011 recipientof the DistinguishedGradu-
ate Award fromthe UnitedStatesMilitary
Academyandthe GeorgiaTech Schoolof
EngineeringHallof Fame in 2014as well

Predeceasedby his wife,JoAnn Wilson
McNair,in2017afteralmost60 yearsof

Lincolnin 1950.

ShemarriedRobertStevensin 1952;they
weremarriedfor 25 years.She wasalong-
timeresidentof FairfaxCounty,primarily
Oakton,for the last 52 yearsof her life.
She greatlylovedgardening,mostly flowers,
andkept amagnificentgardenoutsideher
ground-floorcondoin Oaktonthatwasap-
preciatedby manyin the building.She had
manyfriendsprimarilyfromher churchcon-
gregationat the UnitarianUniversalistCon-
gregationof Fairfax,whereshe wasamem-
ber for over40 yearsandthe retirement
groupof theNavyFederal CreditUnion,
whereshe workedfor almost15 years.
She had twowonderfulsisters,EvelynLou-
ise Robshawwhopassedin 1998and Cleo
MaxineWells whopassedin 2020and sev-
eral nieces,nephewsandgrandniecesand
grandnephewsin Omaha,Nebraska. Billye

munity,volunteeredatthelocalschools,
supportedher husbandas amilitaryspouse,
ranthe McLeanHighSchoolfootballbooster
club,and helpedfoundthe NationalCapital
SoccerLeague,usingherhouseasthehub
of the initialorganization.Althoughnot an
athleteherself,she wasan avidsportsfan
whoattendedas manygamesas possible
for her childrenand grandchildrento cheer
themon. She wasaCatholicschoolteach-
er at St. JosephCatholicSchoolin Herndon,
Virginiaandworkedforseveralyearsatthe
RANDCorporation.Shewasan activevol-
unteerin Gainesville,VAwhereshe and her
husbandmovedin retirement,volunteering
at PrinceWilliamHospitalandHolyTrinity
CatholicChurch.

theirHeritageHuntCommunity.Cindyand
Markwereactivemembersof the Shepherd
of the HillsLutheran Church.Her hobbiesin-
cludedironing,cross-stitching,andlaundry.
Her fatherusedto say she couldhavemade
moremoneyas alaundressthanateacher.
Shewasfiercelydevotedto her husband,
children,and her grandchildren.She loved
nothingmorethanto be withthem,espe-
ciallybeingan Emato the fivegrandchil-
dren.Her favoriteweekeveryyearwasthe
weektheyall spenttogetherin the Outer
Banks.Wewouldlike to thankthe amazing

roy FraughtonandJessieTaylor.She stud-
ied nursingat RusselSageCollegein Troy,
NewYork, receivingher B.N. degree.Be-
foregraduating,shereceivedthe coveted
“BestNurse”award.Shortlyafterbeginning
her careerin Albany,New York, she meta
youngdoctor,JohnRobertTietjen,MD.The
restis history.They marriedin 1945.They
remainedalove storythroughouttheirlives
together.The youngcouplewerewellde-
scribedin TomBrokaw’sBook,The Greatest
Generation.TheysurvivedtheGreatDe-
pression,World WarII, and had the grit and
determinationto workhard,lovewell, and
serve others.Once married,NormaTietjen
put asideher nursingcareerto createa

homefor her husbandandthreechildren.

untilDr.Tietjenretiredfromhis positionas
MedicalDirectorof the Central Intelligence
Agency.The couplethenmovedto Peters-
burg,Virginia when Dr.Tietjenacceptedthe
positionof Directorof PublicHealthin the
tri-citiesarea.NormaTietjenwasamember
of Petersburg’sCockadeCityGardenClub
andtheWomen’sMedicalAuxiliary.She
wasan accomplishedseamstresswitha
greateye for color,makingeverythingfrom
her ownstylishoutfitsto adaughter’sfor-
mal eveninggown,as wellas complicated
draperiesfor theirhome.The couplewere
membersof ChristandGraceEpiscopal
Church.NormaTietjenwaspredeceased
by her belovedhusbandJohnin 2015.She
wasalsopredeceasedby her brother,Rob-
ert Fraughton;sister,JoanSpear;and son,
JohnRobertTietjen,Jr.She is survivedby
twodaughters,Dr. PatriciaTietjenDemont
of Springfield,VirginiaandDonnaJ. Tietjen
currentlyresiding in Charlottesville,Vir-
ginia.Shehas onegrandchild,LisaKristine
Demontof Los Angeles,California.Sheis
alsosurvivedby abrother-in-law,Dr. Merritt

his wifeof 59 years,CelesteCaufieldWard,

and LuluGonella(Geoff)and fourgrandsons,
DanielWhittle,Geoff Gonella,Jr., Christopher
Whittleand AndrewGonella.
Davidwas bornon April13, 1934,in Worces-
ter,MAtoparentsAnthonyand HelenGrady
Ward. He graduatedin 1958fromHolyCross
Collegeand in 1961fromGeorgetownLaw
School.He proudlyandhonorablyserved
two yearsin the Army.After his workduring
law schoolas aCapitolPoliceOfficer,David
beganhis professionalcareeras an ener-
gy lawyerwiththeFederal PowerCom-
mission.He thenenteredprivatepractice.
Davidwasheavilyinvolvedin the energy
industry’stransitionto independentgas and
hydroelectricgenerationandnatural gas
andelectriccompetition.He wasan avid
supporterandvolunteerwiththe Energy
Bar AssociationandFoundationof the En-
ergyLaw Journalwherehe servedin various
roles.In1989-1990,he servedasthe presi-

dentof the Federal EnergyBar Association.
His daughter,Elizabeth,followedhim as an
energylawyer,workingwithhim at Flood&
Ward beforemovingto NixonPeabody.She
learnedso muchfromhimand carriedthe
lessonsto her practiceand legalcareer.She
lovedparticipatingin proceedingswithand
oppositehim overthe years.
Davidhadmanypassionsthroughouthis
life.Inhis youth inMassachusetts,heplayed
baseballandice hockey.Hewas an avid
sailortakingnumerousmulti-dayexcursions
withfriends,not onlylocally,but sailingfrom
NovaScotiato Annapolisand fromVirginia
to Bermuda.He nurturedalove for biking,
ice skating,duckpinbowlingand skiingin his
daughtersas theyweregrowingup.Inhis
fortieshe rediscoveredgolf whichbecamea
highpriorityin retirement.He nevermissed
his daughters’events,includinggymnastics
anddivingmeets,concerts,and marching
bandcompetitions.Helovedbringingout
his old baseballgloveto helpat his grand-
sons’baseballpracticesand attendedmany
of theirsportingand musicevents.Hewas
alsoalifelongfan of the BostonRed Sox.
David’strue happyplacewasCeleste’sfam-
ily campat GreenLakein Dedham,Maine.
Herehe wouldtinkerwiththe house,go
out on his boat,paddlein his kayak,explore
the littletraveledcrevicesof the lakeand
its woodsand,mostimportantly,enjoythe
companyof his wifeand family.Wecontin-
ue to searchfor the locationof his “secret”
blackberrypatch.
Davidwasamemberof KenwoodGolfand
CountryClubsince 1977 wherehe spent
countlessdaysgolfingand goingto the gym.
He wasalsoadarn goodduckpin bowler.
