Susan Dominus is a staff writer for the magazine. In 2018, she was part of a team that
reported on workplace sexual-harassment issues and that won a Pulitzer Prize for
public service. For this issue, she writes about surrogate mothers in Ukraine and how
the war has complicated an already complicated process. ‘‘The surrogate mothers and
the surrogate agency and the intended parents were all struggling to determine whose
needs came first, a matter of exceptional urgency during a time of war,’’ Dominus says.
‘‘The questions were anguishing, and at times they really struggled with who even
had the right to decide.’’

Behind the Scenes

Kathy Ryan, director of photography: ‘‘For
this issue, Michael Steinberger writes about
Amanda Sobhy, who is the fi rst American-
born squash player to break into the world’s
Top 10. We assigned the photographer Cait
Oppermann. She brings a wealth of experience
to this type of sports shoot, which you need
if you want the right movement and light to
come through in the photographs. is was
taken at Sobhy’s local squash court, which we
turned into a photo studio. As you can see from
how Cait is positioned in this shot, you need
to bring some of your own athleticism if you
want to photograph athletes.’’ Photograph by
