AIRSHOW WINGS OVER CAMARILLO

W

ings Over Camarillo, held
in southern California from
August 18-19, offered a
truly eclectic mix of aircraft types.
In its 38th year, the event
(which also features a renowned
car festival) was hosted at
Camarillo Airport. Each day’s
flying programme ensured
great attendance, with ticket
sale revenues going to local
non-profit groups that promote

youth in science and aviation. One
highlight was the US Navy Tailhook
Legacy Flight display, comprising
a VFA-122 F/A-18F Super Hornet
flying together with the CAF
SoCal F6F-5 Hellcat and F8F-
Bearcat. With particularly strong
representation from CAF SoCal,
the Planes of Fame Air Museum,
and Palm Springs Air Museum,
warbird activity included routines
by D-Day Doll, the C-53 Skytrooper

from the Inland Empire Wing of
the Commemorative Air Force,
which even dropped paratrooper
re-enactors each day. There were
dramatic water drops by a Ventura
County Sheriff’s Department Fire
Support Bell 205 helicopter, Los
Angeles County Fire Department
Agusta AW139 helicopter fly-bys
and dynamic routines by the Army
Aviation Heritage Foundation Bell
AH-1F Cobra.

Working within a three-mile
waivered airspace limitation
and 6,000ft ceiling, the show’s
organisers still managed to provide
spectacular aerial action. Super
Hornet demo pilot Lt Justin ‘Scraps’
Grofik expressed disappointment
he could not exhibit his mount’s full
capabilities because of airspace
restrictions, but nonetheless
the jet still produced impressive
condensation shock waves!
