Welcome

I

t seems very much a case of alpha and omega
this month.
An interesting ‘beginning’ graces our pages,
as we unveil a new airshow display team in the
form of the Vintage Pair. Jon Higgins and David
Petters, who y Chipmunks, are making a bid
to become warbird pilots of the future and this
venture is their rst step. Having been in the back seat for a practice
session with both aviators, and seeing their professionalism at rst
hand, I’m sure they will eventually get into the cockpits of the Spit res
and Hurricanes they so obviously revere.
In contrast, we highlight the sad fact that warbird collector Peter
Teichman has made the tough decision to retire from display ying, and
our retrospective interview with Peter sheds light on his determined
aviation journey. However, the move does allow him to spend more
time with his family and nish restoring his Spit re Mk.IX. Peter is
certainly not giving up ying altogether. It will just be a case of ‘for
fun only’, although he’s reserving the right to perform the odd routine
here and there, at his favourite events. I think we can all agree that his
aerial skills will be sorely missed on the wider airshow stage.

I must also announce, after 34 years with FlyPast (mostly at its helm),
our irrepressible former editor Ken Ellis will have retired from parent
company Key Publishing by the time these words are read. ‘Uncle’ Ken,
as he’s affectionately known throughout the rm, took up the reins of
FlyPast in December 1984 and has been part of the lifeblood of aviation
writing ever since. He was launch editor for AirForces Monthly, editor
of Air Enthusiast and has presided over more specials and bookazines
than I can remember. Ken has recently been working as contributing
editor to FlyPast, which has made my move to managing the magazine
much easier. Fear not though, as Ken will still write for us in between
updating his invaluable Wrecks & Relics series and completing other
book projects. Ken, sir, you leave big boots to ll!
