Fieseler
Storch
This month’s Spotlight examines one of the essential
but relatively unsung workhorses of World
War Two, the Fieseler Storch. The high-winged
monoplanes served Germany and other nations
well. These versatile machines were well suited to
operations from short or roughly prepared landing
strips, and ful lled a variety of roles. Many were attached
to squadrons as communications or utility aircraft, while
others were used to keep track of enemy armour and troop
movements. Thanks to their simplicity and reliability,
several remain airworthy to
this day.

Fieseler Storch VP546, pictured
in 1951, was used as a glider tug
by the Empire Test Pilots School,
Farnborough. It was withdrawn due
to a lack of spares in 1955 and is now
preserved at the RAF Museum Cosford
as ‘GM+AK’. KEY
