FROM THE WORKSHOP ENGINE RESTORATION
David Houghton considers the task before
him... complete restoration of ’666 to ground-
running condition.
Cylinder one is removed, to provide the fi rst
clear view of the engine’s internal parts. The
four piston rings and heavy carbonising on the
piston crown are visible.
David drills a hole in the 5mm aluminium
fi rewall. The original comprised an alum/
asbestos/alum sandwich and was removed.

Throughout the project I have been supported and helped by my two colleagues and friends from my ‘nuclear
days’, Paul Wilkinson and Dave Litherland. They were there whenever three brains and three pairs of hands were
needed. This was my fi rst foray into the world of both professional and amateur historic aviation. I have found the
community at large helpful and supportive throughout, but would especially like to thank Martin Slater of Air Atlantique,
Peter Grieve of Flight Engineering and The Aeroplane Collection’s Mike Davey.
