THEN & NOW

Nottingham
When Charles took this picture
looking south to Meadow Lane
Bridge 1, a rare surviving
hump-backed bridge on the Trent
Navigation through Nottingham,
this inner city area was still
industrial. Turney Brothers’
leather works and a dairy were
among the surrounding factories.
Today, the hump-backed bridge
still stands, but the trees have
grown, and most ofthe industry
has been replaced by new homes.
The old houses on the right were
demolished for road widening,
while Turney Brothers’ main
building (centre) is now the Turney
Court residential development.

Nottingham
This picture taken near the city centre shows
Wilford Street Bridge, seen from the east, with
Castle Lock just out of sight beyond. Today, in
place of the rather rough concrete towpath
(with a right angle corner) is a more user-
friendly waterside path, and modern
architecture has replaced some of the
waterside buildings, but the Navigation Inn
survives. And while modern narrowboats and
widebeams are more common today, the
picture shows that cruisers are still to be seen.
