How novel to see a car without
gaping air inlets, ducts, vents, and
winglike appendages that only
increase aerodynamic drag. The
Speedtail’s central driving position
makes sense, as do the two slightly
rearward positioned passenger seats.
Regardless, it’s refreshing to see and
read about something other than
SUVs, crossovers, and big-ass vans,
which are as aerodynamic and sexy as
a brick, trying to be luxury vehicles.

Robert Cumberford and I have
the same issue with the McLaren
Speedtail: the front wheel covers.
They remind me of the BBS fans
that were frequently put on the front
wheels on the Porsche 956/962 in the
Group C and IMSA GTP races in the
1980s and early ’90s. At least Group
44 got it right with the Jaguar XJR-7
when it fit the fans to all four wheels.

More than 20 years ago McLaren,
with Gordon Murray and Peter
Stevens, unleashed the F1 onto the
unsuspecting world. Three seats,
enough luggage space to carry two
golf bags, and more than 600 hp. All
this in a carbon-fiber monocoque that
held test engineers safe when they
rolled it at 160 mph during testing.
Murray and Stevens are now gone
from the team, and here is McLaren’s
take on progress: still three seats in
a body from “The Jetsons,” with less
luggage space, almost 3 feet longer
than the F1, more weight, and 1,136
hp. Nowhere but on a dedicated
circuit like Nardò can one run it to
Vmax, so what’s the point?
In the same issue are two beautiful
gifts: David Lee’s reborn and oh so
beautiful Dino and the splendid and
unobtainable Alpine A110. You have
to wonder what would have come of
Murray’s second shot at creating an
icon; it could have been something
closer to these two: graceful, powerful,
and definitely not boring.
