The main problem as I see
it, with rechambering
your .22-250 to .22-284 is the
standard twist of 1:14" which
limits the weight of bullets
you can use to the Hornady
60gn soft-point. It will not
stabilise the 60gn V-Max
which needs at least a 1:12
twist. You'll need a tough
bullet to stand the high
velocities. I’d recommend
Barnes 45gn TSX FB, as that
bullet will work in the 1:14
twist. My ballistic programme
calculates that about 53gn of
AR2209 would deliver
4400fps at 53,000 psi. This
wildcat should be no harder
on barrels than the factory
.220 Swift load because the
pressures are no greater.
Custom dies are available from
RCBS but they'd be a special
order job and quite expensive
because of the number of dies
required to form cases. Neck
the new .284 case to .224 in

three stages: .25 calibre, 6mm
and finally .224. These dies
are necessary. Finally,
full-length size in the RCBS
FL .22-284 die and ream the
neck to the correct thickness.
All the work needed to form
cases for the .22-284 makes me
recommend that you foget it
and instead have your rifle
rechambered for either the
.22-250 Ackley Improved or
one of the wildcats based on
the .243 case. They are much
easier to make then the
.22-284. The .22-243 Jaybird,
for instance, affords a good
compromise between ballistic
flexibility and maximum
velocity. It retains the same
body length as the parent .243,
but body taper is reduced to
minimum and it gains a
longer neck from increasing
the shoulder angle to
35-degrees. This wildcat really
needs a 1:12 or 1:10 twist. But
the cartridge reportedly

churns up muzzle velocities
of 4000 3980, and 3850 fps
respectively with 50, 52 and
60gn bullets. RCBS makes
dies, but once again they’ll be
expensive. Just like the
.22-284, the Jaybird is for the
sophisticated handloader only.
If I were you I’d settle for the
.22-250 Ackley; it is a lot
less trouble.

“The Outlaw Josie Wales”?
I just bought and watched
a DVD of the film and reckon
it’s one of the best westerns of
all time. What do you think?

Clint Eastwood used
a pair of 1847 Colt
Walkers in The Outlaw Josie
Wales. Walker copies made by
Uberti are imported by Beretta
Australia. It was no hardship
for me to dig up my DVD of
that movie and watch it again
to answer your question. It is
a great movie, but not as
good as Lonesome Dove.
Incidentally, Uberti also
makes an iron-frame replica
of the Henry rifle in.44-40
(instead of the .44 Henry Flat
Rimfire cartridge) that’s a
spitting image of the original
with blued or brass frame. Bet
you’d like to stick one of those
Henrys in your saddle
scabbard cowboy!
