SHOOTER’S
SHOWCASE WHAT’S NEW IN THE MARKET – BY TONY PIZZ ATA
This 208 page high quality, hard
cover book is writ ten by
well-known big game hunter
Steve Isaacs. Like many of us he
is a self-taught hunter and from
early childhood, had a passion
for the outdoors and its wildlife.
“I could never get enough to
read and look at on the subject,”
he tells, “Hunting was in my
genes, as a kid school seemed to
be just a hindrance to me.” Fast
forward to today, Steve has
hunted in Australia, New
Zealand, North America,
Europe, Asia and Africa and this
profusely illustrated book
outlines many of those journeys.
I’ve known Steve for some 25
years via several hunting clubs I
have been associated with, one
of which he was president of for
many years. In my eyes he’s one
of the forefathers of deer
hunting in Australia and has
contributed immensely via
various deer management
schemes to the deer hunting we
know and enjoy today. The book
starts with an Acknowledgement
by the author, then a forward by
another well known forefather of
deer hunting here in Australia,
Bob Penfold who enlightens the
reader of Steve’s achievements
and contributions to the
A Hunter’s Life Journey In Print
hunting industry over the past
forty years he has known him.
In addition to the many well-
writ ten chapters, Steve has
provided a large selection
of colour images to illustrate
the many journeys he
has undertaken.
His close family bond is also
evident in this book where in
particular he devotes a chapter
to “The Women In My life” his
wife Judy, daughter Nichole and
four granddaughters. In addition
to hunting the Isaacs family are
also well known for their big game
fishing achievements. In fact, as
well as an accomplished deer
hunter, his wife Judy is well
known around big game fishing
circles and has won several
awards in the Ladies Big Game
Anglers division. A portion of this
book is also dedicated to Steve’s
son Mark, who has accompanied
him on many local and overseas
trips and today guides with his
father for most Australian big
game species, but in particular
fallow deer, red stag and rusa
deer, buffalo and banteng.
In addition to a delightful read, I
found this book had something I’d
never seen in a published book to
date. For those who are tech’
savvy, Hunting In Our Genes
features a QR link code which
allows the reader to scan and
view via mobile phone or tablet a
series of photos and videos taken
by Steve over many years of
hunting. In effect, in some cases
you read the story, and then view
the video on that subject. Steve
tells me some of the video footage
goes back to the old Super 8 days,
and these films have been
converted for readers to view.
For those of you like me who
don’t know much about this
modern technology, this QR link
generator, I’m told, is a free app
and available for most mobile
phones and tablets.

Genes by Steve Isaacs retails
