THE f irst 1946 Gun Digest,
edited by John.T.Amber
offered the complete gun
review by America's foremost
gun writers. Each edition
contained an untold wealth of
information for hunters and
shooters. My collection of Gun
Digests dates from 1951 to the
2015 edition; sadly I'm missing
copies from 1946 to 1950.
Maybe a reader can help?
The new 69th edition, a
landmark for gun nuts, is the
third edited by Jerry Lee and
contains articles on the widest
variety of subjects imaginable
together with five Testfire

reports on new firearms;
Reports From the Field cover
new rifles, shotguns, various
kinds of handguns, ballistics,
components, ammunition
and optics.
Specific calibre features
include: the .44-40,.38 Super,
.32 S&W, the .30 M1 carbine
and .270 Winchester. Aussies
will devour “Br ita in's Black
Powder .303” by Garry James
and “The Guns of CZ,” by Brad
Fitzpatrick. “Understanding
Powder,” by Philip Massaro is
there for handloaders and
Dave Morelli's treatise “5
Biggest Challenges to Long
Range Accuracy” compares
the pros and cons of several
popular cartridges.
Fans of western movies will
be intrigued with “Holsters of
Arvo Ojala,” by Rick Hacker,
relating how Hollywood actors

who Ojala trained became
genuine fast-draw artists.
Tom Turpin annually edits
a pictorial review of the
beauty and artistry of “Custom
& Engraved Guns” and now
backgrounds the new Heym-
Martini 88-B Safari rifle based
on the Heym Express action
which he helped design.
Chambered in .375 H&H, .404
Jeffery, .416 Rigby and .458
Lott the 88-B offers unheard of
sub-MoA accuracy.
Once again, editor Jerry Lee
has succeeded in assembling a
broad mix of interesting and
constructive features to appeal
to the greatest possible
audience, including the long
overdue “Rifles of the Safari
Sisters” by Wayne Van Zwoll. It
dispels any notion that women
nimrods are inferior to men
when it comes to hunting and

cleanly taking game. His
comment that: “the .257
remains an overlooked prize,”
in the non-magnum category
confirmed that the author is
truly objective.
The rear section of the Gun
Digest offers an up-to-date
catalogue of firearms, ballistic
tables and a web directory of
every section of the firearms
industry, plus some extremely
useful reference tables. Well
done, Jerry!
