New Staff Appointment for
Expanding Palmawatch
The Mallorca based yacht
service and refit/repair
specialist Palmawatch have
recently appointed Sylvain
Brault as their new Director
of Operations. Sylvain will be
responsible for coordination
of projects including the all
important communication
between various trades and
the Palmawatch dedicated
workshop, which is sited
adjacent to Palma’s STP
superyacht refit yard.
The lift out facilities and
extensive hard standing space
at STP has been busier than
ever this past winter, and
Palmawatch have been very
active on a number of major
projects at the yard, where
they have serviced over 500
yachts and completed several
refits per year since they
started out back in 2002.
Palmawatch was founded by
two yacht captains, Pierre
Oberon and Peter Bräckel,
and the appointment of
Sylvain follows the company’s
philosophy of retaining
staff with proven sea going
experience, in order to bring
detailed practical knowledge
to the project management
aspects of their work.
Sylvain holds an MCA Ocean
Yachtmaster certificate, and
started sailing dinghies in his
native Canada back in 1965,
since then he has covered
80,000 NM at sea as captain
of a number of large yachts.
This includes 23,000 sea
miles as master of a Swan
100 which he supervised the
construction of in Finland,
before taking her around the
world for her owner.
Honing his project
management skills by working
in shipyards for three years,
Sylvain has supervised
several major refits including
the transformation and
accommodation revisions on
S/Y Sedna IV (ex-St Kilda), a
165’ (49.5 metre) 3 masted
schooner, which went on to
complete a film expedition on
the Northwest Passage in the
Arctic Ocean.
In 2012 Palmawatch were
appointed as “Preferred
Service Partner” for the ever
growing fleet of Oyster Yachts
in Mallorca, an important
recognition of the quality and
reliability of their services
from one of the world’s
leading boat builders.
As an example, one of the
projects the company are
currently engaged with, is
the total reconditioning of an
Oyster 625 being executed
over a four month period. The
works involve a complete top
sides re-spray, interior and
exterior glass fibre and gelcoat
works, overhaul of engines,
servicing several pumps and
comfort systems, electrical
repairs, mast un-step and
rig service, cleaning and
refurbishment of sails, rudder
dropped, drive train service
(propeller, shaft, cutlass
bearings, aquadrive), bow
thruster service, some teak
deck work and antifouling.
Another experienced
Palmawatch project manager,
Hamish Burgess-Simpson,
is dedicated to ensuring the
successful completion of
another ‘Palmawatched’ refit!
Palmawatch managing
director Pierre Oberon said,
“the appointment of Sylvain
marks a significant stage in
the continued expansion of
the company, and he will be
actively engaged in helping
us to further improve our
facilities and handle even
more major refit projects in
the future.”

Jongert Becomes Jongkind
Without any doubt many
captains have heard of Bert
and Hannie Koopman. For
more than 35 years this
couple has worked in the
yachting industry on the
island of Majorca. They will
now continue their yacht
services under a new name:
Jongkind Service Palma.
Bert Koopman started his
career at Marine Elektronics
Oegsgeest in the Netherlands.
In the early seventies Bert,
then a navy employee, built
a ten meter steel sailboat.
He saved up enough money
to sail this ship around the
Mediterranean with his
wife Hannie. This adventure
lasted four years before they
decided to settle down at
Palma de Mallorca. There they
continued to live on their boat
and Bert, a trained engineer
and experienced sailor, easily
got many assignments. Soon
the word spread that Bert
was an excellent engineer and
Jongert’s marketing and
sales agent, Herbert
Dahm, invited him to join
Dahm International.
In those days Jachtwerf
Jongert built many sailboats
that found their way to Palma.
Jan Jongert, then the owner
of this shipyard, asked Bert to
coordinate the services for his
yachts. A new firm, Jongert
Service Palma, was founded
and it shared its workshop
in the centre of Palma with
another Dutch firm. The
main products and services
provided by Jongert Service
Palma have always been
hydraulics, rudders, shafts,
generators and electrics. In
addition to Jongert, other
boatyards and manufacturers,
such as Hydromar, Heinen en
Hopman and Victron Energy,
are also among its clients.
In 2014 Jongert Services
Palma continued its activities
under a new joint-venture
with the Dutch firm Cornelis
Jongkind (CJ). For more than
27 years CJ has designed,
supplied and integrated
technical systems, electronics
and automation for the
entire maritime sector. As a
representative of renowned
maritime equipment
manufacturers CJ supplies,
installs and services individual
components. Its teams in
both The Netherlands and
Mallorca are highly specialized
in service, maintenance
and installation.
