The Causeway Landing on Sabine Lake in Louisiana is on High-
way 82 approximately three miles west of Johnson Bayou.
Another Louisiana landing located across the Sabine River
channel from Orange, Texas, is the burnt-out bridge on old U.S.
Highway 90. But anglers with larger bay boats should use cau-
tion here because the canal is narrow.
When fishing
in the lake, it’s
important to
know where the
border between
Louisiana and Texas
is because redfish
and length limits
are state-specific.
An angler may fish
anywhere on the
border lake with
either a Louisiana
or a Texas license.
In Texas waters
however, Louisi-
ana anglers must
adhere to Texas
creel and length
restrictions, which
allow each person
to keep up to three
redfish within a 20-
to 28-inch slot limit.
Texas law also
only allows one red
drum longer than
28 inches to be
kept by any angler
during a license
year with a prop-
erly completed red
drum tag, with one
extra fish over the
slot being allowed
with a bonus red
drum tag.
Those tagged reds
are in addition to
the regular three-
fish daily bag limit.
In Louisiana waters on Sabine Lake, the usual 16-inch minimum,
five-fish creel limit is enforced, with no more than one redfish
exceeding 27 inches maximum total length.
There are differing creel limits for speckled trout, as well, so
anglers are advised to visit the Texas Parks and Wildlife website
at www.tpwd.state.tx.us.
Directions, launches and
varying regulations
Accessing the Sabine River National Wildlife Refuge’s
interior marsh through some of the cuts in the bayous and
canals off Sabine Lake is prohibited.
So it’s wise to consult the refuge’s regulations at http://www.fws.
gov/southeast/pubs/SWLAcomplex_Fish.pdf.
Also, fishing within Sabine NWR’s borders when entering
from Sabine Lake is permitted only from March 15 through
Oct. 15 of each year.
