Morgan said cobia are still huddled around the
closer-in rigs, and amberjack action is steady at struc-
ture in 200 to 600 feet of water.
“Mangrove action will pick up as the water tem-
perature warms, and hopefully we’ll get a good red
snapper season when it opens,” he said.

Capt. Jody Donewar (504-453-1519) said April fish-
ing is a lot like March.
“This is not a bad time of the year for fishing, you
just have to be willing to go with what the winds
give you,” he said. “On windy days you have to work
along the banks for reds and drum and flounder.
I’ll fish the interior lakes and bays on both sides
of the river, and just drift along the shoreline and
blind cast, using either live shrimp under a cork, or
Hybrid Flurries in the key lime or LSU colors, tight-
lined. Normally you can put together a nice mixed
box of reds and drum and flounder like that, along
with some specks. They will definitely hit those live
shrimp under a cork, and they’ll hit your tight-lined
plastics, too. But when I get a calm day, I’m head-
ing outside to try to find some big trout around the
islands.”

Myrtle Grove
Capt. Dave Marino (504-656-8192) said his advice to
April anglers is short and to the point: “Look for trout
under the birds diving in Bay 5, Airplane Bay and in
Bay Cray. For bait use the 3-inch white Gulp imitation
shrimp under a cork. Try the cuts in the same bays
with market shrimp under a cork for the redfish.”

Lafitte
According to Rusty “China” Helmer, over at Joe’s
Landing (504-689-4304)), April’s arrival should bring
the fish with it.
“Naturally a lot depends on the fronts, but the air
and water is gradually warming and that prompts
the fish to bite,” he said. “We finally get winds more
consistently from the south and east and that brings
in better water and better fishing.
Helmer said anglers should catch both trout and
reds this month in the Rigolets along the cement
wall, in the Little Lake area, around Bay L’Ours,
Brussel Lake, Plum Point, Turtle Bay and Hackberry
Bay.
”It’s not too early to start trying Manilla Village and
some of the other spring hotspots,” he said. “The
best bait is live shrimp or live cocohoes fished under
a cork.”
