surface.
Bass should be on the banks, he said. Potential hotspots
include in the bays and protected waters off the main river,
such as Dan’s, Watermelon, Moss Bluff and Berry bays.Sabine River
Hopefully, warmer weather will jump-start the buzz bait bite usu-
ally associated with late March and April along the Sabine River.
Bass still will be spawning at the time, according to Lake
Charles bass angler Ron Castille. They can be caught in the
shallows on black/blue, watermelon/red or green pumpkin
plastic lizards and creature baits rigged Texas style.
He slowly swims the plastic lizards in depths of 3 feet and less
in an up-and-down pattern that covers 1 ½ feet below the sur-
face to about 6 inches off the bottom.
Castille said it’ll also be time to start throwing crankbaits
that cover 3-foot depths and
shallower. He prefers a shad-
or bream-colored colored
crankbait in clearer water and
one with chartreuse on it in
stained water.
Another favorite of his is a
3/8- or ¼-ounce chartreuse/
white or chartreuse/blue/
white spinnerbait.
Castille fishes in and around
cuts and man-made structures,
as well as the flats from the
grassy shoreline of the marsh to

To the delight of many bass
anglers, Laccasine Pool on the
Laccasine National Wildlife
Refuge reopened March 15
after being closed to fishing
since Oct. 15.
Bassin’ success should be fair
to good in the marsh the rest
of March and in April, accord-
ing to Lake Charles outdoors-
man and accomplished bass
angler Ron Castille.
There still should be time for
sight-fishing bedding bass, an
effective way to hook up with
big bass through the spawn-
ing period.
Castille encourages catch-
and-release fishing during the
spawn.Fish at least 3-foot depths with Flukes, Senkos, plastic frogs such
as Ribbits and ½-gold Rex spoons. Work those artificials in and
around grass beds and pencil grass, mostly along the main trails.
Soft plastics like Flukes and Senkos can be deadly when
dropped into holes in the vegetation, he said.
Also fish with 3/16- or ¼-ounce chartreuse, chartreuse/white
or white spinnerbaits along the edge of lily pads, along ditches

After some big bass were caught in Lake Arthur in late
February and early March, many local bass anglers couldn’t
wait for the rest of March and April.
