Ouachita River
Assuming late rains don’t put the river too high
before April, fishing should be good, according to West
Monroe angler, Bobby Phillips.
“In the event of some rising water, your best fishing
is more likely to be in the river lakes and sloughs off
D’Arbonne Bayou,” Phillips said. “Bass will be hanging
around in the backwaters around structure such as
brush, stumps and logs. A good bait to try is a Rogue or
maybe a soft-plastic lure such as a lizard or Brush Hog.
“The crappie spawn will be
going on, and I’ll likely locate
them around the bases of
cypresses in the sloughs. Hair
or tube jigs and shiners work
on these fish.”
Phillips said some of the
lakes off the river are good
bream bedding areas and by
late in April some should be
on the beds hitting crickets
and worms.
Cheniere Lake
Cheniere Lake has under-
gone a drawdown this year,
but late rains should put
lake at pool stage by March,
according to Bobby Phillips.
“The bass spawn will be
going on, and the best bet
is to target logs or stumps
in fairly shallow water with
something like a plastic
worm, lizard of jerk bait,”
Phillips said. “The crappie
will be spawning around the
cypress roots, which could
be a challenge because of so
many cypresses in this lake.
“Moving from tree to tree
with a Black Lake hair jig or
tube jig is the best way to
catch a good mess of crappie
this time of year.
“By late in the month, you
will find bream beds where
chinquapins and bluegills
are setting up housekeeping;
they’ll go for crickets, worms,
or small spinners like a Road
Runner.” ■
