ALL THE TOP KIT FROM THE UK’S BIGGEST AND BEST SHOOTING SHOW
VOL 17 | ISSUE 5 | MAY 2015The two new rifl es from Southern Gun
Co and Caledonian Classic Arms
subscribe to the semi, semi-automatic
system, in that they use a self-loading
operating mechanism. However after
each shot the action is mechanically
held open and has to be manually
released by the shooter. SGC base
theirs on the AR15 - the Lever Release
(LR223) with a large, push-down lever
on the left side of the grip. Caledonians
uses the Czech Vz 58 with the trigger
offering a double pull to both fi re and
trip the bolt – Manually Actuated
Release System (M.A.R.S.). While
researching an article on Mauser broom
handle pistols I found a reference to a
Mauser M1915 Flieger-Karabiner. The
M1915 was a semi-auto rifl e used as
defence guns for German balloons and
observation planes in WW1. They also
incorporated a manual operation system
not unlike the LR 223 and M.A.R.S.
Back then it was done to reduce ammo
expenditure, so I guess the modern
idea has historical provenance. It’s a
funny old world!
