30 CLASSIC BOAT MAY 2015
Restoration under 40ft Acanto
Leonardo Bortolami restored this International Dragon as
part of a PhD, the practical element sponsored by the
Cantiere Alto Adriatico shipyard. The restoration, covered
in Yard News at the time, has been a complete rebuild to a
“scientific process” developed by Leonardo as part of his
studies at the University of Ferrara’s architecture faculty.
Traditional
new build
Droleen
Jim Horgan, winner of
our ‘small traditional new
build’ award last year
with his 16ft 3in (5m)
Galway Galley, continues
his mission to find small,
historic Irish boats to
build. Droleen (Dróilín in
Irish), just 12ft (3.7m) long,
is a lively adaptation of a
trawler’s punt. The plan
is to build six more to
encourage tourism.
Powerboat of the year Lady Charlotte
A century-old tourist boat from the River Dee with a riveted-steel hull,
transformed into an electric-powered Thames launch by Henwood &
Dean. Cabin and interior were built separately while the elegant clipper-
bowed hull underwent restoration elsewhere. It’s a perfect match.
