Venue of the week
Uxbridge Rovers Angling and Conservation Society is one of the oldest
angling societies in the UK and its portfolio of waters in and around
Hertfordshire and the Colne Valley is well worth investigating,
particularly Batchworth Lake in Rickmansworth. is spring-fed
10-acre lake contains carp to more than 30lb and the lake record is a
common at around 40lb. Club membership is around £80 a year. For
further details, go to http://www.uracs.co.uk.
16mm Sticky Krill pop-up shed
over a bed of chops. Head baili
Mark Stewart told Carp-Talk: “ ere
are some absolutely stunning old
carp in both Jenkins and
Churchwood Lakes, with a healthy
stocking of younger sh that are
continuing to progress very well. We
have purposely kept the lakes
relatively quiet as we approach
spring, to ensure that all work on
the lakes is completed before the
busy period. Both lakes have had
swim makeovers, which will
improve the overall comfort and
enjoyment for visiting anglers.”
Regular visitor Lee orneycroft
from Southend spent his birthday
on Churchwood Lake and landed
one of the younger, newer stockies
at 18lb. Jim Nye smashed his
long-standing personal best of 14lb
twice on a recent visit to Jenkins
Lake. Taking the advice of shery
owner Steve Sands, Jim shed a
pop-up six inches straight o the
lead and was rewarded with a 21lb
common and a 22lb mirror. ere is
a good head of this stamp of carp in
both lakes and regular multiple
catches can be had as water
temperatures start to rise. With the
venue’s excellent facilities,
Churchwood is popular with groups
of anglers looking to sh Monday-
to-Friday sessions. To check
availability, call 01277 375499 or
visit their website on http://www.
churchwood sheries.co.uk. I am
told that there are just a few dates
still available over the spring and
summer months.
Steve Byrne marked his rst
session of 2015 at Menards with a
personal-best sh of 35lb 6oz, a
common known as White Tip. Steve
used a Mainline Salty Squid boilie
and shed his rig down a channel
that joins the two halves of the lake
together, a well-known winter
hang-out. Steve’s end tackle
included Korda Dark Matter tubing,
a 3½oz COG lead arrangement and
a sti IQ2 hooklink shed D-rig
style to a size 6 Kaptor Choddy
hook. Perry Webb from Portsmouth
banked a new previously uncaught
home-grown mirror, which Menards
has named Double D, at a weight of
20lb. Perry used a 1½ft zig link with
black foam and a coating of Betalin
sweetener in 3ft of water.
Luke Terry’s e orts on Sussex
day-ticket water Swanborough
Farm are paying dividends. Luke
has banked more than 25 sh in a
three-week period and was
celebrating after landing a personal-
best 34lb mirror. Luke landed the
sh on an Urban Bait Nutcracker
pop-up on a hard patch amongst
silt.
Mark Gibson enjoyed a great
72-hour session on the soon-to-be-
opened Wraysbury No. 1. Mark
banked 17 to 21lb 1oz during a
charity event for Stoney & Friends
McMillan Cancer Support. He
spodded hemp and particle mix and
used Evolution plastic maggots and
sweetcorn on a chod rig made from
Vardis end tackle. Wraysbury’s
owners RK Leisure believe the sh
could be one of the famous lake’s
originals.
Catches at Chase Lake are
starting to hot up, with the tricky
Front Lake giving up a nice thirty.
Chris Walling was a happy carper
after banking a cracking 32lb
mirror. Chris set up in the Cherries
swim for an overnighter and landed
the sh on a Mainline Milky To ee

pop-up. Andy Kitching shed a
48-hour session on the Back Lake
and the highlight was a new
personal-best common of 23lb 9oz.
Andy set up on the Point swim and
landed a small mirror, before the
common took his 15mm Nutz
boilie. Andy also banked another
small mirror.
Lee Valley’s Banjo Lake and
Stock Pit in Stanstead Abbotts,
Hertfordshire, are both starting to
sh well, and a big thank you to
baili Martin Phipps for getting in
touch. Birthday boy Lee Hawes set
up in swim one on Banjo for a
24-hour spell, moved to swim seven
and then enjoyed a fabulous
session. Lee banked 10 carp ranging
from 14lb to Lee’s new personal
best, a nice 29½lb mirror. All the
sh were caught on claw rigs in
conjunction with Korda safety-clip
systems. His hookbait comprised
pink and yellow fake corn and was
shed over a baited spot. Terry
Glasgow shed swim 10 on Banjo
and managed two nice mirrors of
16½lb and 13lb 1oz, both caught
from the inside margins. Stuart
Palmer returned to Banjo after a
three-year absence and set up in
swim two. He was rewarded with a
lovely 26lb 7oz mirror caught on
the far margin, using the ever-
popular Sonubaits Code Red boilies
tipped with Purple Squid corn. Loz
Clark shed swim seven on Banjo
and had mirrors of 18¼lb and 24lb
6oz, again taken from the far
margin. Craig Ellis shed swim
three on Banjo and was rewarded
with a nice 26¼lb mirror.
