is lovely 27lb 6oz mirror (top) was the rst
sh of the year to be caught o the bottom at
Cleverley Mere in Essex. Its captor was
21-year-old air-conditioning engineer James
Cottee of Wickford, who was doing a 72-hour
session on the nine-acre water. James shed to
a prebaited area on a clay bar at 30 yards,
o ering a Spicy Lobster hookbait on a blow-
back rig tied from 25lb Fox Camotex Soft, a size
6 Korda Krank hook and a 3½oz lead. Rods were
the 3lb Wychwood Classic versions, to which he
attached ISO reels loaded with 15lb Gardner
GR60X main line.

A 48-hour session on Ashmire Lake in
Cambridgeshire produced this 26¾lb mirror
(above) for 22-year-old sca older Tom Flack of
Needingworth. He told Carp-Talk: “I was awoken
by two bleeps and then a massive drop-back on
the right-hand rod. I picked it up and started to
wind in until I made contact with the sh.
When I got the sh close in, it kept really low in
the margins and didn’t show itself until the last
minute, when I slipped the net under it. I
weighed the shed at 26¾lb and rang my mate
Micky to organise photos before he had to go to
work.” Tom o ered Nutz pop-ups on hinged
sti rigs on a silty spot at 80 yards, baiting with
a few handfuls of halved freebies and 10mm
Zing boilies. End tackle comprised 20lb Rig
Marole Hydrolink and 20lb CamH20 links, size
4 Korda Krank Choddy hooks and distance
leads. Set-up wise, he used 12ft 3½lb Free Spirit
Hi-‘S’ rods, Shimano Ultegra Ci4 14000XTB
reels and 18lb Adrenaline main line.

BEST OF THE REST:

Priory Park in Southend, Essex, has
found a rich vein of form, throwing
up a number of twenties to visiting
anglers. Joe Atkinson from
Hockley was amongst those who
found success, taking nine sh to

27lb 11oz (top), known as John’s
Fish, during a six-hour stint. e
23-year-old tackle-shop employee
told Carp-Talk: “John’s Fish was one
of my targets, so having not shed
the venue a lot, it was great to sneak
this one out.” Joe shed 12mm
