A 48-hour session on a
Northamptonshire
syndicate water saw
Darren Connor from
Rowley Regis, West
Midlands, bank this 43lb
common (right). e
43-year-old supervisor
told Carp-Talk: “I turned up
late on Friday and most of
the pegs had gone, so I
ended up in a swim I didn’t
fancy. Nothing happened that night or Saturday morning. en my good
friend Duncan came around for a cuppa and as we were talking he told me
he’d seen a sh show earlier that seemed to be in front of my peg. I reeled in
my middle rod and recast to open water. Nothing happened until Sunday
morning when Duncan returned for another cuppa. Just then my middle
rod bleeped once and the bobbin fell o the line, which went tight then
slack. I hit into what I thought would be nothing, but it turned out to be a
heavy lump plodding up and down the lake. It put up a hell of a ght and
at-rodded me a few times, but 20 minutes later she was in the net.”
HD Snail & Insect boilies did the trick for Darren, who shed close to a
weedbed at 80 yards range where he baited with half a kilo of free o erings
mixed with particles and chilli hemp. He o ered a pop-up on a 360 rig tied
with a size 4 JRC curved hook, a 25lb hooklink and a 4½oz distance lead.

Rick Austin from Deeping St James,
Lincolnshire, caught this 47lb 14oz
common (left) during a 48-hour
session on a Nene Valley syndicate
water. e 48-year-old electrical
technician told Carp-Talk: “I’ve shed
through most of the winter, about
twice a month, but the last sh I
banked from this venue was in
September. I got to the lake on
Friday morning and, after a walk
around, I spotted a sh roll out in the
centre. I got set up and saw a further
eight sh roll throughout the day. At
3pm the next day the margin rod
tore o. After a 15-minute battle I
managed to get her in the net at the
 rst attempt.”
Rick used Mainline Cell and
Activ-8 boilies and shed on a clear
spot at the foot of the marginal shelf,
baiting with 70 mixed 15mm free
o erings. He presented a uorescent
pink pop-up blow-back style on a size
