ROUND-UP

1st: A 24-hour session on Sutton-at-Hone
saw 15-year-old Dan Bainbridge from
West Kingsdown, Kent, bag himself four
impressive carp including this 22lb
common. Single Sv2 wafter hookbaits
attached to size 6 Chodda hooks and cast
20 yards to open water produced the
goods.

2nd: Luke Rowswell from Wickford,
Essex, banked this distinctive 21lb linear
and six other sh during a 48-hour session
on Crowsheath Fishery. e 15-year-old
schoolboy tempted the scaly stunner after
baiting an island margin with half a kilo of
Urban Baits Nutcracker boilies.

3rd: Having seen sh showing and
swimming through a channel, 14-year-old
Sam Vandermark carefully walked a rod up
the bank and positioned his AM hookbait
in a likely looking interception spot. e
spot was then primed with a scattering of
chopped and whole freebies. A short while
later the rod was away with a 15lb mirror
and once repositioned it was away again
with this 21lb mirror.

4th: Ross Norminton from Aldershot
spent the day at well known Bagshot Lea
and having struggled to spot any sh
chose to follow the wind down to a snaggy
corner. e bait hadn’t been in the water
more than 10 minutes before he latched
into his rst sh of the day and he went
on to bank several small commons and
this 14lb mirror.

e month kicked o at Madison
iceTackle, a new trade show
where all the Leeda brands were
on display. It was great catching
up with people I don’t see too
often and to get my hands on
some of the cool new gear coming
this season. My favourites are the
new Tactical Compact Flat
Bedchair and the Fluoro Slug
Bobbins.
en it was o to Carpin’ On
at Five Lakes. I love this show as
there is always a great buzz and its
run by three of carping’s loveliest
ladies, Bev, Pip and Jemima.
Highlight of the show, though, was
a group photo with Jon Mac, Nigel
Sharpe, Nick Helleur, Julian
Cundi and Terry Hearn. Now
that’s a serious carpy dream team!
Fishing wise, I did manage a
day between shows in some pretty
rubbish weather. I shed a club
water in a ooded swim to some
snags, but getting baits on the
spots was made really di cult by a
big crosswind which not only
dragged the line into a loop, but
also made the snags I was shing
to move around a lot. Its situations

like these when I opt to not sh to
the clip, but to ease the rig in by
eye, that way I’m watching where
the lead is going and can feather
the spool to suit. I managed one
common of around 16lb, which I
was more than happy with given
the conditions.
Next month is the start of my
closed season so I will be on work
parties pretty much every weekend
between now and May. I actually
enjoy these as it’s a great way to
exchange tips with other anglers
that sh the waters. I am hoping
that I can get one last trip in this
coming weekend before I hang the
rods up for a few weeks.
