FAKING IT
We are coming bang into the
time when the plastic fantastic
comes into its own. Just
imagine how many carp get
caught on a totally un avoured
bit of rubber... ridiculous, isn’t
it? I can’t go anywhere without
having some to hand, and at
times it will be my only line of
attack when everything else has
failed. I’ve even had instances
both in the UK and France when
a balanced plastic corn rig, with
not even a bag of pellets for
attraction, has got me bites.
Obviously the main thing it
has going for it is its colour. I’m
sure there are people out there
that believe there’s something
within the rubber/plastic
compound that attracts the
carp, but I personally think
that’s drivel; without doubt it’s
the colour.
What I know is that as a
single whacked out at showing
sh, in a solid bag, or especially
over the top of a spod mix of,
say, hemp and corn, it’s
absolutely devastating, and
certainly in early spring when
the sh are hunting round for
grubbage after their winter
lay-up.
As for rigs and
presentations, look no further
than a KD rig, or even a simple
knotless knot rig. If you check
out the picture accompanying
this tip, it’s a simple KD knot,
but with a large beaked point
hook, which I believe stays in
better during the ght. Also,
don’t be scared to use a big
hook. e one in the picture is a
size 6 and, again from personal
experience, the carp nd a
bigger hook a lot harder to eject
than a dinky size 10.
Give it a try this spring; the
carp really can be suckers for
the old plastic fantastic at this
time of year.

biggest of six carp landed by Nick
Chase from Ash, Surrey, during a
48-hour session on Yateley
Sandhurst Lake. Nick, 34, told
Carp-Talk: “I was shing after the
Lake had been booked for exclusive
use, and with only a few sh coming
out all year, I decided to sh singles
over what I imagined was a lot of
bait that was already out there. I
saw a sh show after only a few
minutes and pitched up. After a
quick lead and marker about, I
found a nice silty area, and within
four hours I’d landed the big mirror

Urban Baits Nutcracker cork
