destination: Tasmania

Solitaire
With Andiamo's early morning departure,
we had East Cove all to ourselves. The 10-
knot ENE breeze was warm and Nine of Cups sat
nicely in the bay. We walked up the hill to the
compound taking pictures of Cups down below
and wallabies all over the pathway.
With the help of a borrowed island map and
Mary's recommendations, we decided to try
some of the walking tracks. The track to Winter
Cove on the east coast was long and hot, but the
views of the cove were stupendous.
Next we walked the track along the old
airplane runway which led to Garden Cove
on the north shore of the island. Wallaby eyes
seemed to be everywhere, peeking out from
beneath the tussock grass. Some were trying to
hide, their long tails protruding into the path
though the rest of them was hidden.
Sometimes they darted out and startled us;
other times we could hear them just behind us
hopping madly across the path. Birds darted,
butterflies fluttered and the day was perfect.
We walked back to the compound to visit the
small island museum.
The island has had some interesting characters
living here when the lighthouse required a
keeper. In 1992, when the lighthouse was retired
from service, the area became Tasmania's most
northern national park and caretakers were
solicited to volunteer to live on the island for
three month terms.

Deal Island; Author's Marcie and
David ham it up for the lens; The
Deal Island lighthouse remains
resolute, albeit a bit too tall.

“...the cup of tea and orange slices Mary
had waiting for us were much appreciated.”
