destination: Tasmania

David and Marcie Lynn
Marcie and David are sailors and writers who
have been full time cruisers for 14 years. They
have sailed over 70,000nm to date, cruising
some of the more remote parts of the world and
have been exploring your Australian waters for 2-1/2 years.

including the crew. The weather was cool and raw and we
wondered when the fine, warm days would return.
The next day dawned glorious and sunny and we took
advantage of the light easterlies to sail back over the top
of Deal to East Cove once again. To our surprise, three
boats had arrived at different times during the previous
night and were all anchored in the bay.
Heading up the hill to the compound, we ran into
traffic other than the usual wallabies. Everyone from
the anchored boats was ashore taking advantage of the
sunshine, bushwalking, sightseeing and generally enjoying
the warmth. I had promised haircuts for everyone.
We hauled a chair out into the yard and all agreed it was
the most scenic haircut venue they'd ever experienced.
We headed into shore that evening for a potluck with a big
batch of freshly popped corn to munch on and two pizzas
to share. The wallabies were curious and peeked out at
everyone from their tussock hides. The possums weren't
shy at all and edged their way closer and closer to the
alluring smell of food.
We got a dinghy tow back to the boat from the
captain of Storm Bay, a 1925 traditional, fine-looking
wooden yacht. We hauled the dink and stowed it on
deck. We had the rest of the evening to relax before
our early morning departure across the Bass Strait to
Tasmania's wild west coast.
Deal Island is, indeed, a magic, memorable place.
