The Gros Islet Friday night jump-up, ten
minutes walking distance from the marina, can
get a little bit rowdy later in the night but a six
o’clock visit offers a first close-up view of how
the locals live and party.
Grilled chicken from a street BBQ, a man
creating grasshoppers and flowers from reed,
lemonade for the juniors and rum punch for the
adults, this is the Caribbean life.
Recuperating on the beach is another option.
Racing photos of many eras decorate Spinnakers
bar, a great spot for beach-based activities, lunch
or just lazing on sun lounges.
Marigot Bay is only a few easy miles from
Rodney Bay. Once you have spotted the hidden
entrance get the anchor ready to put down
along the side of the narrow channel or look

for a stern-to berth on the dock of the well-run
marina. Fresh croissants from the bakery on the
dock sell like hot cake, get there first thing in the
morning and stock up.

Are there safety concerns?
Marigot Bay is a great base from which to tour
the island by minibus.
The magical Pitons and the nearby town
Souffriere did get a bad name only recently when
a sailor got killed on his boat. Cruisers are rightly
concerned about their safety, have a Plan B.
Instead of staying in the rolly anchorage at
the Pitons you can hire a minibus with guide in
Rodney Bay or Marigot for an all-day island tour
with zip-lining and mud bath. You will also see
the Pitons in passing.

ABOVE: Beautiful
beguiling Bequia.
INSET: Large
lobster lunches
available at
Tobago Cays not
to be missed.
