Ally PAlly Show rePort
London Model Engineering Exhibition – 16th to 18th
January 2015 by Chris Saunders
The view of London, from the terrace at Alexandra Palace on a
fine morning, made the long drive from South Wales seem very
worthwhile to the four club members of Cardiff Marine Modellers
who travelled together to the show. This year the Snooker
Championship was on at the same time as the Model Engineering
Show and so the entrance was abuzz with people for both events.
It wasn’t long before we were all into the Great Hall, which was
completely taken over by this well supported exhibition holding our
maps showing the positions of all the exhibitors. After agreeing a
time and place to meet we all went our separate ways. My first call
was to the Traplet stand to let everyone know I had arrived and to
get my camera and notepad ready to visit all the boating stands.

The free show guide revealed that there was a very good turnout
of model boat clubs and where they were positioned. Using this
guide my wife and I attempted to visit every display. We were
struck by the amount of preparation that had gone into each stand
and the high quality of craft exhibited. It took all the time we had
available to visit all the displays, chat, take pictures and get details
of the excellent models. It took almost four hours to circulate the
displays and I was very grateful for my wife’s help in taking notes.
By the end we had chatted to someone on almost every display
with model boats and taken over a hundred pictures. I will use
a number of these for the ‘Readers Models’ section in future
editions where I can give more details of individual models and their
builders, as this report can only give a general overview.
Although we have visited this show several times previously we
always find something new. This year we ventured downstairs and
discovered the restaurant. This large venue had plenty of tables
and seating and two service areas. To the left was the fish and chip
server and to the right a more general menu. We had a very nice
roast lunch and drink at a reasonable cost in a relaxed environment.
This allowed us to save our packed lunches for when we got home.
