OUR ENGINE IN MORE DETAIL
Looking at the Frog 349 marine we can see, as with last month’s E.D. Hornet, this
is still a single speed engine with simple spray bar and needle valve fuel regulation.
One can also see that there is no exhaust manifold or silencer and, in these
respects, this is very much a 1950s product. By the ‘60s both of these aspects had
been addressed by Hales and the Frog 349 acquired a simple R/C carburettor and
an exhaust manifold/stub pipe.
Overall, this engine is strongly built in a nicely cast crankcase and it exudes
quality, as well it ought, at a price of 99 shillings c1960. Well, I think that’s my cue
to bid you all farewell for yet another month. Next
month I’ll be leaving model diesels to look at some
books from the early days of marine modelling.
Until then, there’s just time for me to thank
Michael Beesley for finding me this engine and to
say cheerio for now. MMI
