The hull was planked with half-inch softwood, the planks shaped
to accommodate the sheer of the deck, which was determined by
the top strake. Deck beams were fitted and covered by thin ply
which formed a foundation for the deck.
As most of the deck would be taken up by the large cargo hatch,
it seemed pointless to plank it all, so the outside frame of the
hatch was made, put in place just abaft where the mast would be,
and half-inch pine planking glued on to the deck plywood to abut
the edges of the hatch. Low white-painted bulwarks were added
around the bow and stern. A cargo winch, made largely from cogs
salvaged from an old clock, was fitted to the foredeck alongside a
hatch to the cuddy. To be strictly accurate, a winch wasn’t fitted to
JJRP until she was motorised in the 1930s but I took a little artistic
licence and just hope the purists will forgive me.
