with no sign of the prop slipping. The smooth
ICON control box and hydraulic steering
made it all so easy at the helm, making the
Trident a pleasure to operate.
The Evinrude HO outboard was spinning a
19-inch Rebel prop that had the Trident
cruising at just under 21 knots at 3000 RPM.
Top speed in smooth water was 46 knots
which is impressive for a boat of this size with
a couple of big blokes on board.

Fishability
Designed for offshore fishing, the Trident is
no doubt perfect for a day out trolling or
bottom bashing the reefs. Outrigger mounting
points are standard and with four rod holders
across the transom, trolling is covered.
Bottom bashing in a rolling swell requires
anglers to dig either their knees under the
gunwale or toes under the side pockets for
stability. The Trident’s guwales are a little
high for most people and there is no room
under the side pockets so this is a slight
drawback. The big seats and the dash
mounted sounder makes bottom bashing a
patch of reef, especially at drift, difficult
because it’s hard to see the sounder but that is

all the nitpicking that I am going to do with
the Trident. The bait board and live bait tank
are fantastic and designed by fishermen for
fishermen. The kill tank that can be drained
is also a huge plus.
The cabin size means that a walk around is
out of the question and getting to the bow
would be best done by going through the
cabin hatch. The hard top means that casting
slugs for tuna or mackerel is not very
practical from the transom but can be done
from the hatch while motoring up to a
working school. The anchor can be released
from the hatch as well without having to
climb into the bow so if fighting a good fish,
a quick release clip and buoy on the anchor
rope can be easily activated.
Overall, the performance, layout and
fishability of the Trident will see this hull
compete with well known hard top
manufacturers and if that is not impressive
enough, the 500m and 60 hours of welds that
have gone into this build makes it one of the
toughest on the market.
Priced from $87,168 or as tested for $93,808,
the 690 is competitive and certainly worth a
look if you’re in the market for a serious
offshore boat.
