ANGLERS in NSW are being
reminded that changes to the state’s
recreational fishing rules are now in
effect. Minister for Primary Industries
Katrina Hodgkinson said the changes
are now in place, after taking into
account feedback from thousands of
recreational fishers. “These changes,
supported by a majority of people who
made submissions, include modified
bag and size limits and gear usage
rules,” Ms Hodgkinson said.
The Minister said of the 16 changes,

five include minor rule adjustments to
reduce red tape and streamline fishing
rules. “The NSW Government is proud
to support our recreational sector,
which contributes more than $1.6
billion to the state’s economy each
year,” Ms Hodgkinson said. “A
three-month advisory period will be in
place to allow recreational anglers time
to adjust to the new rules.” To view a

VICTORIAN anglers marched last
November in Geelong to support
commercial netting bans on Port
Phillip and Corio bays. About 700
recreational anglers marched down
Moorabool St to Cunningham Pier
for the rally, which was led by
fishing identity Rex Hunt.
According to Hunt, the show of
unity marked the rally as “the best
day in Victorian fishing history”.
Victoria’s major political parties were
represented at the march with the
then Government and Opposition
sending respective fisheries
spokespeople Peter Walsh and Jacinta
Allan. The march was a result of the
previous Coalition Government’s
plans to ban commercial netting on
the waterways. Prior to winning the

election, the Daniel Andrews led
Labor Party had confirmed its
support for the netting bans.
Each party had pledged to spend
$20 million to start buying back
licences from commercial operators.
At the assembled rally Rex Hunt told
the gathering “netting is gone ...
the people have spoken”. Australian
Fishing Trade Association CEO
Allan Hansard said his industry
would try to harness its new-found
political clout in other states.
“What we have achieved is
unprecedented; to have support for
this from both parties so far out from
the election is a great achievement,”
Mr Hansard said. “We’ll now be
going across the country to establish
recreational fishing havens.”
