six to seven metres on the troll aren’t exactly
common. Those that do plumb the depths
include the Halco Crazy Deep Scorpion,
Halco Crazy Deep Poltergeist and Predatek
Boomerang. My good mate Marc Stead has
turned his hand to crafting some beautiful
timber lures that crash through the six metre
mark easily. Kayaks are well suited to trolling
these deep divers at walking pace for big
f lathead and jewfish with the outside chance
of encountering yellowtail kingfish or even
cobia. If the results of kayakers trolling deep
diving hard-bodies on the NSW North
Coast are anything to go by, there is
tremendous potential in this technique.
Those guys are consistently catching
everything from good-sized snapper through
to Spanish mackerel. It’s definitely a
technique I intend doing more of in the
coming months.
Deep-water lure fishing our estuaries is
certainly an addictive style of angling. It
rewards those anglers who are willing to put
the hours in and hone their skills with
sounder and rod and reel. The most successful
Lake Macquarie deep water lure devotees that
I know include Steve Norris, Chris Vegh,Michael Aubrey, Marc Stead, Steve Gresham,
Jason Nunn, Chris Weekes and Darryl
McNaught. These are the guys who have done
plenty of deep thinking about Lake
Macquarie and know their home waters as
well as anyone.
Lake Macquarie continues to fish very well
since its closure to commercial fishing in
May 2002. I have every confidence it will
continue to fish well into the future if we all
do the right thing and only keep what we
need and, most importantly, release those big
