DESTINATIONS: SA’S WESTERN ISL ANDS
But there comes a time when the outside
world should realise just how good SA’s fishing
is, especially around our offshore islands.
Unfortunately SA’s state Labor Government
has recently introduced marine park sanctuary
zones around many of these pristine offshore
isles, and if we cease to continue raising
awareness we fear the anti-fishing movement
will carry on enveloping more of our
unique islands and reef systems.
On a more positive note,
the array of islands dotted
throughout our state’s western
waters have the potential to rival
many well-known fishing
destinations ... you just need the
weather on your side to access these
remote areas.
From consistent fishing for SBTs,
kingfish and samson fish on the deeper reefs
to monster KG whiting and f lathead in the
sheltered lee-side bays of these islands, the
diversity on offer is amazing. And most people
wouldn’t realise just how many islands there are
lying offshore from South Australia’s coastline.
We have a total of 346 islands here in SA, and
most of them offer pretty good fishing.
The majority of these islands lay in our
western waters, from the south-eastern tip of
the Eyre Peninsula though to the SA/WA
border. Some of these islands are easily
accessible by trailerboat given fair weather, but
others are more of a logistical challenge. Some
of these islands – although offering superlative
fishing – are beyond the reach of most
