AUSTRALIA'S native fresh-
water eel tailed catfishes
include several members of the
Family Plotosidae that have
evolved over millenia to survive
in the harsh and unpredictable
environments of Australia's
inland waters. The best known
species on the east coast is the
eel tailed catfish (Tandanus
tandanus), which occurs in
coastal rivers along the eastern
seaboard from the Hunter River
north to central Queensland, as
well the Murray-Darling basin ...

THE Australian and Queensland governments
have released their draft Reef 2050 Long-Term
Sustainability Plan for public comment and it’s
already received significant levels of scientific
and marine park stakeholder criticism, both
nationally and internationally, over its light-on
treatment of sediment and run-off risks, threat
abatement for issues such as crown of thorns
infestations and lack of fish population
management strategies. It hasn’t been helped
by the cutting of the Great Barrier Reef

Marine Park Authority’s budget by $2.8
million and departure via voluntary
redundancies of 17 experienced staff members,
including five members of the Authority’s
senior management team. There are fears that
the reef ’s World Heritage status could be in
danger as a result of this combination of
events. The draft plan is available for comment
