neat trick he suggested was to replace your
snapper lead with a knife jig which will also
act as a teaser for the kingies.
The use of circle hooks has been widely
accepted by recreational anglers, particularly
those in the game fishing fraternity. They
consistently provide solid jaw hinge hook ups
that allow for quick fish releases resulting in
excellent survival rates. First time users of
circle hooks often find it hard to resist the
natural urge to strike hard to set the hook in
the fish when they get a bite. Scotty has
coached literally hundreds of his clients in the
use of circle hooks while chasing kingfish and
recommends that they hold the rod tip high
and when the kingfish takes the bait allow it
to pull the rod tip down to water level, then
slowly load the rod and you should be tight to
the fish. Slow tapered rods can actually be left
in a rod holder and the kingfish will usually
hook themselves.
Livebaiting is a tremendously effective way
of targeting yellowtail kingfish and other
offshore favourites. It requires reliable, quality
tackle and good, strong rigs. Do the right thing
and only keep what you need for a feed and
return any unused baits to the water so there
will be some available next time.

THIS MONTH’S WINNER
BAND-AID SOLUTION
Before spooling a reel I like to apply a
band-aid to the spool before at taching the
line. You can also use electrical tape.
Without this, if you use braid, the entire
spool of line can sometimes slip and spin on
the spool. You won’t notice until you’re on
the water fishing and by then it’s too late.
Try this simple solution for spooling braid
and never worry about a slipping spool of
line again.
