with a familiar “scent” and get wolfed down
with gusto. Stale and old baits that have
commenced decomposition will leach out
insipid chemicals which are no doubt sensed
by predators as potentially hazardous and
will thus be picked at with hesitation or
completely ignored.

Keep your bait fresh
Open your fridge and you expect to be met
with a pleasant array of fruits, vegetables and
produce that looks, feels and smells fresh.
If you turn the fridge off for a few weeks and

reopen, the sight and smells will be pungent
and unappealing. Fish likely have a similar
basis for determining whether to eat
something, so it pays to keep the freshness
aspect a priority when bait fishing. Remember
to use the freshest possible bait (or even live
bait) and keep your bait in its optimal state by
placing it in a cool, shaded spot like in a bait
esky with some ice. A fresh meal is a safe meal
so always aim to keep your bait looking,
feeling and smelling as fresh as possible.
By doing so you’ll markedly improve your
chances of tempting those trophies!

Freezer burnt bait like this is OK for berley
but almost useless when it comes to actually
catching a decent fish.
