hough I am sure it is not the first of the year, on
behalf of the team here at BOME, may I wish all
our readers a fantastically Happy New Year, and
hope that you are all surfing into January with
masses of resolutions to get out sailing more, not to neglect
your boat and to make sure no more DNF / DNS results
on the board. And no, I don’t want to hear any excuses of
kids, family, coastguard, too expensive, etc... where else in
the world can you be sailing in January in a polo and not
mind hiking into a head sea?
So what are you in for this month? While I know ‘luxury
products’ have a place in magazines, I personally prefer
them in Esquire to BOME, so I ignored all the watches press
release and stuffed this issue with as many boat stories as
I could find. From looking at three different catamarans
now available from UAE dealers, to the powerful new
Prestige 750 and the sailing views of the Beneteau Oceanis
55, there are a host of hot models on the market. Talking
of the market, what has 2015 got in store for the leisure
boating industry? I ask the region’s top brokers what they
think. Well, in fact, I did ask the top brokers, but not all of
them responded, so we’ll see what we come out with!
Pick up a modern sailing magazine and they are always
espousing the merits of a healthy lifestyle, fitness for
racing, etc. Well it’s all a bit over-the-top if you ask me.
When I was crewing on Shockwave many moons ago with
Admiral Skenny (the deserter who returned to blighty)
we had a very different exercise regime. So I thought I’d
compare how these exercises pan out in the modern
gym-based world.
Well that’s all very well, you may say, but what about
the important local events? Qatar International Boat
Show, the ISAF Worlds in Abu Dhabi, Pre-Owned Boat
Show at the Creek, DOSC’s 40th anniversary... oh yeah
and the Volvo Ocean Race? Well with so much happening
these days, by the time you get to read it, it will already
be a distant spec in your wake. If you want up-to-
date streaming then read it on the internet, that’s
what all the kids do these days.
As for this antiquated medium, you’ll still
find a few more articles on boats dropped in,
a chat with ART Marine’s CEO about Abu
Dhabi, a look at two very different 40-footers
from beneteau and Gulf Craft and a focus
on my wishlist of pre-owned yachts to
run away on at the end of completing
this issue.
So if I don’t see you down in Abu Dhabi
over the new year period, hope you have a
great start to the year and get out on the water.
The time is now!
