he Open 40 is Nautitech’s 3rd
generation 40 footer and second
design from Marc Lombard,
incorporating from many of the
features seen on the Lombard 54, such as
twin helm positions, transom passage,
and rigid bimini. The Lombard influence
can be seen in the long waterlines and
high aspect rig with square top mainsail,
giving a generous sail area, thus ensuring
light weather performance. The ‘Be Open’
concept (hence the name) comprises a
super-wide double sliding door from
the cockpit, linking the interior with the
outside. Thanks to this design, the Open
40 is an exceptional boat for entertaining
in all weathers. Unlike the flying helm of
other cats, Lombard’s Nautitech has a more
traditional working cockpit with twin helms
and a lower coachroof to facilitate better
upwind performance. Combined with the
contoured sponsons and sharp prow, expect
cruising speeds in the low teens when the
wind is up, with twin 30hp saildrives with
three-blade folding props giving a good
eight knots when needed. With the cockpit
benches served by the interior galley, the
whole deck epitomises the open concept,
with up to four cabins available or a single-
hull charter version. However, with the
sailing a priority, while well-appointed, the
double en suite cabins are all of traditional
yachting size. Keeping the interior lines
and decoration as modern and crisp as the
practical deck layout, wenge-effect flooring
and composite veneers are used throughout
to complete the designed aesthetic vs
performance balance.
