BOAT LIFE

Camera, action!

Capture life on and under the ocean waves

with Jeremy White’s pick of the latest tech

t seems almost churlish to encourage those
lucky enough to be on the ocean to enjoy
sights and sounds other than beautiful
vistas and lapping waves. However, should
you tire of staring at cliffs and lagoons, here
are some superb pieces of technology that
are perfect for expanding your onboard
audio/visual horizons.
The ever-reliable high-end camera
company Leica, having celebrated its
centenary in 2014, is still laudably pushing
boundaries. Its new X-U model, developed in
collaboration with Audi Design, is a 16.5MP
snapper that can shoot under water, as it is
waterproof down to 15 metres.

What’s more, it is also shockproof and
sealed against dust – so no amount of nautical
misadventure should harm this camera. Well,
maybe not, but with a 3-inch screen, built-in
flash and dedicated underwater mode, this is
nevertheless ideal as a ship’s shooter at £2,400
(leica-camera.com).
Should things get a little racier, perhaps
with a spot of kite surfing or tubing, you
won’t want to risk the Leica, naturally. Nikon,
thankfully, has just entered the action-camera
market with its KeyMission 360 (nikon.com).
Yes, it is small, shockproof, dustproof and
waterproof (to 30 metres). However, the Nikon
scores with its dual Nikkor lenses and image
sensors, which mean it can record 360-degree
4K UHD video. Available soon.
Of course, you are going to want to review
your captured creativity as soon as possible
back on board. For this, look no further
than LG’s PF1000U Ultra Short Throw LED
Projector ($1,399, lg.com). This diminutive
Full HD, WiFi-enabled machine weighs less
than 2kg and can project a 250cm image from
just 38cm away from a wall, so is eminently
stowable and can be carried around with ease.
