manager was on hand to approve all the technical specifi cations of the
yacht alongside the owner. We have a long history of award-winning
projects with Amels, which is still growing.”
For the initial 199 concept, Heywood drew two alternative profi les.
Th e fi rst followed the lines of her sister models with a traditional raked
stem. Th e second off ered something rather diff erent. “Th e second
was what I termed a ‘scimitar’ bow,” Heywood explains. “It’s a bit like
a vertical stem, but with some curvature. I showed them the clipper
bow fi rst, which they quite liked, but then presented the scimitar bow
and said that if they really wanted to push the envelope, I’d like them
to build it. I was really pleased [when they did] because it was such a
unique and original feature and it totally changed the look of the boat to
make her really something contemporary.”
Her profi le is defi ned by combination of sharp angles and knuckles
balanced with sweeping curves, with the addition of giant, round hull
ports adding to her intriguing style. Th e bow is more than just a fashion
statement, though – it allowed for a large tender garage under the
foredeck helipad, with gull wing doors adding to the drama.
“Because I took the curved profi le line around the side of the bow,”
Heywood says, “the side cheeks of the bow are very full. Th at meant we
could actually move the tenders forward which alleviated a lot of the
space aft .”
As a result, the entire aft end behind the engine room has been
designed as a generous beach club complete with sauna and fi tness suite.
Direct access to the water via the large swim platform gives a great area
for guests to relax while at anchor, which they can enjoy uninterrupted
by the crew launching the tenders and toys forward.
Th e garage includes an award-winning custom limo tender designed
by Heywood to mimic the style of the mother ship. “Th e tender’s bow is
obviously a major feature,” says Heywood, “and a couple of the knuckle
