EQUANIMITY

LOA: 91.5 m
Builder: Oceanco, Netherlands
Designer: Oceanco + Andrew Winch
Interiors: Andrew Winch
Launched: 2014

Earlier last year Equanimity turned up in Tahiti, and she was alternating
between the Japanese ports Yokohama and Yokosuka at around the end of
the year.
Th is Oceanco is aptly named, says the yard, “because from her
exterior to her interior to her inner core, she is perfectly well balanced”.
Th e yard waxes lyrical about it: “Th e etymology of the word equanimity
derives from the Latin aequus meaning balanced and animus meaning
spirit or internal state. Th e concept of equanimity – internal balance – is
both profound and refi ned.”
Th is fl owing philosophic description provides a clue as to the
owners, whom the yard will only say “are of Chinese origins.” Online
gossip goes further, suggesting they are Koreans of Chinese descent,
now based in California, so they have strong connections on both sides
of the Pacifi c. Fashion retail stores are the core business.
Th e name and owners aside, she is a breakthrough vessel in that she

has the distinction of being the industry’s fi rst superyacht designed and
built to be fully Passenger Yacht Code (PYC) compliant. Th is means that
the old superyacht restriction of having only 12 guests aboard has been
lift ed, in light of the ever-increasing size of such vessels.
Equanimity provides luxury accommodation for 26 guests in a
variety of fl exibly confi gured staterooms, which include a magnifi cent
master suite, three VIPs, three doubles and two twin staterooms. She
also has ample accommodation for 28 crew to cater to the owners and
their guests.
Th e new PYC regulations are complex, and building to them is
not easy. Oceanco’s CEO, Marcel Onkenhout, says: “Working with
Lloyd’s Register and Cayman Islands Shipping Registry, we designed,
developed, engineered and built this magnifi cent yacht, which will
undoubtedly set new standards in the industry.”
Measuring 91.5 m in length and with a 14.5 m beam, her chic
clean exterior styling is the combined work of Oceanco and Andrew
Winch Designs. Th e beautiful interior has also benefi tted from the
quintessential touch of Andrew Winch. Its inherent oriental-inspired
themes involve a montage of sumptuous materials such as wenge, gold
leaf, bamboo and marbles, creating an opulent and soothing ambiance
that complements the owners Chinese ancestry.
Th e grandeur of the spa and beach club is enhanced with a sauna,
hammam, experiential showers, plunge pool and a multi-faceted beauty
salon. Th e spa area leads on to a fully equipped gym and Pilates studio
that can be extended through a fold-down platform at sea level.
Equanimity hosts two Zodiac Fast Rescue Ribs and two 10.5 m
custom Hodgdon tenders. Additionally, there is a spectacular 20 m^2
swimming pool with jets. Providing a new benchmark in superyacht-
based aviation, the upper deck boasts a fully certifi ed helipad in
accordance with CAP 437 regulations as adapted for the PYC. Th e vessel
is steel-hulled with aluminum superstructure, and is propelled by twin
4,828 HP-3,600 kW MTU 20V 4000 M73L engines, enabling her to
achieve top speeds in excess of 20 knots.

SURI

LOA: 63 m
Builder: Halter Marine, America
Designer: Joseph Artese
Interiors: Jeff rey Botwin
Launched: 1987
Latest Refi t: 2012

Built as a support vessel for the superyacht Jemasa, SuRi
doesn’t have the prettiest of profi les, but despite her
rugged commercial look, she has been very successful
in chartering aft er Jemasa was sold and she broke out on
her own, featuring large accommodation areas and lots
of toys.
A major refi t at Whangarei in New Zealand added a
sky lounge, and three years ago she got an 11m exension
at a San Francisco yard. Garage space was increased, and
extra accommodation added. Th e yacht has chartered
in the Antarctic, and on some trips has carried two
submarines and two helicopters, making her a great yacht
for the adventure client.
Since 2014, she has also been chartering in Fiji and Southeast
Asian waters. Check out the website for some surprisingly

sumptuous facilities, and a complete range of toys.
