All lionesses in a pride know
one another. When they meet
the lion greeting ceremony
(rubbing and low purring)
reaffirms their social ties

Dr Uthamakumar Vasantharao
is a neurosurgeon from Kerala.

I was in Masai Mara one
evening when it started
raining. I was watching
three lionesses and their
cubs standing and getting
drenched in the downpour.
Once it stopped raining
one of the lionesses spotted
something interesting in the
distance and started walking
towards it the cubs joining
her with great enthusiasm.
