Lonely Planet India - August 2016

Verditer flycatchers do not get
their dramatic plumage colour
from pigments; instead it results
from the feathers scattering light
such that the bird appears blue

Mayuresh Hendre is a nature and wildlife
photographer from Mumbai.

The verditer flycatcher
is a beautiful bird from
the flycatcher family.
It winters in southern India
and spends its summers up
north in the lower Himalayas.
The bird is a vibrant shade
of blue and like all other
flycatchers feeds on insects.
I took this image while on
a birding trip in Matheran.
Having noticed my presence
the bird was hesitant to take
its bath. But after considerable
waiting – by both parties –
it started splashing about
in the puddle of fresh water.
It curiously peeked out from
behind a rock obliging me
with this photograph.
