What you need to
know about Cork
Navigation
The entrance and navigable
areas within Cork harbour are
well marked, because of the
large amount of commercial
traffic using the port. Once
past Roche’s Point, inbound,
yachts must give precedence
to ships and ensure that they
■ Cork’s iconic building is
the stepped tower of St Anne’s
Church at Shandon on the
north bank of the Lee, but
the city’s finest building is
undoubtedly the spectacularly
ornate Anglican cathedral
of St Finbarr, built between
1865 and 1879.
■ The English Market, off
Grand Parade, was beautifully
restored after a fire in 1980, and
is one of the finest examples in
existence of a covered Victorian
market. It offers foods from
around the world, but is best
known for its fresh meat and
fish, and local delicacies. The old
Cork City Gaol, now a museum,
is also well worth a visit.
Things to see and do
follow the Rules of the Road,
also showing good navigation
lights at night.

tells the story of the town
as a commercial, naval
and emigrant port. Cobh is
dominated by the magnificent
neo-Gothic St Colman’s
Cathedral. Designed by E W
Pugin, work commenced in
1867 and it was finally given its
spire in 1914.
