JJ Shaft (Jessie T. Usher), an MIT-qualified
cyber security expert, seeks to shed light on
his best friend’s mysterious death. For the
help he needs, JJ turns to the legendary John
Shaft (Samuel L. Jackson), his long-estranged
father. John and his son have their obvious
differences but set them aside, especially as
John has his own score to settle.FIVE FACTS:
- This is the fifth film in the neo-noir action-
crime series, and a direct follow-up to the
2000 film also called Shaft. - That film also starred Samuel L. Jackson as
John Shaft. - However, while that film was directed by
the late John Singleton, Tim Story has taken
the director’s chair for this sequel. - Richard Roundtree returns to his previous
role in the 2000 film, except that he is now
revealed to be the Jackson character’s father
rather than uncle, as he was reportedly
“pretending” before. - Roundtree has now played the same
character in all five of the Shaft films,
starting with the 1971 original.
