Drift Rate


(See Chapter 8, Decisions to Make Before Running an Inlet)


Use drift rate for close-quarters maneuvering. You could also use the table to estimate
drift caused by current in critical situations (see reference above).
Example
You are entering a narrow marina channel at 2 knots of boatspeed. You are having
problems with the transmission, and reverse gear is unreliable. How far would you
expect to drift 10 seconds after placing the engine(s) into neutral gear?
Enter the Seconds column and find 10 seconds.
Move over to Speed 2 knots column.
Drift distance: 11.1 yards, or about 33 feet.
