NEWS and NOTES on SAILING-VACATION OPPORTUNITIES

CRUISING WORLD’S

CARIBBEAN FLEET
ADDITIONS
New monohull models are
making their debut at The
Moorings’ Caribbean bases in
winter 2016-17.
Coming to St. Martin, St.
Lucia, Grenada and the British
Virgin Islands is the Beneteau-
built Moorings 48.4. Designed
by Berret-Racoupeau, it’s a
spacious sailboat with four en
suite cabins and room for up to

10 guests. On deck, it features a
mainsail arch, dual helms and a
convertible transom that drops
down to become a convenient
swim platform.
The Moorings 42.1, also built
by Beneteau, has been added
in St. Lucia and Grenada.
It features an airy saloon, a
master cabin with double
bunk and en suite shower, and
two additional cabins that
share a full head. The boat can

accommodate up to six guests.

CREWED
EXPERIENCES
Two trios of sailing catamarans
offer tandem charters that can
accommodate groups gathered
for special occasions ranging
from family reunions and
anniversaries to corporate team
building.
Available in the U.S. and BVI
are the Amazing cats: Amazing
Lady, a 56-foot Lagoon; Amazing
Blues, a 56-foot Lagoon; and
Amazing, a 62-foot Lagoon.
Together, the crewed boats
can handle a total of 30 guests.
Charters are also available on a
combination of two of the boats.
In the Exumas island group
of the Bahamas, up to 17 guests
can sail with the Dreffins, a
liveaboard cruising family with
a circumnavigation in their
wake. Parents Tina and Peter
Dreffin crew Freebird, a 42-foot
Grainger; son Adam is captain
of Rubicon, a 44-foot St. Francis;
and son Warren is captain of
Swish, a 50-foot Voyage. For

SWEET-WATER SAILING
IN THE GREAT LAKES
The popular Unsalted Sailing Flotilla returns in summer 2017 to the
cruising grounds of northern Lake Michigan. Set out from Traverse
City and cruise to dozens of islands, harbor towns and anchorages in
an area whose range is nearly comparable sizewise to the combined
British and U.S. Virgin Islands.
Options for joining the seven-day adventure include booking by
cabin, taking the trip as a coastal cruising course, chartering one
of the company’s fleet either as a bareboat or with a captain, or
following along aboard your own boat.
The flotilla is guided by a lead crew that assists in organizing
activities and the itinerary, which includes wine tasting, nature
hikes, an informal race and frequent opportunities for participants
to explore on their own. Expect sandy beaches, easy anchorages,
and towns with bike and paddleboard rentals, as well as good
restaurants. For exact dates and other details, contact the company
(greatlakessailingco.com).
