Patterson Boatworks has, for some

time, been treading the line between

modern wood construction and

traditional design. The Windermere

Launch range, started in 2003,

exemplifies the approach. The

design, by Hamish Patterson, is

based on the Edwardian steam

launch Bat, a boat that Hamish

considers to have the “perfect sheer

line”. Pictured here are the 25 and

30. Both are built in yellow cedar
    strip plank, with cherry interiors, oak
    covering boards and Douglas fir laid
    decks. The easily propelled hulls are
    suitable for steam, electric or diesel
    power. They were designed for
    electric, but the four built so far
    have all been diesels, and a 20hp
    diesel pushes the 30 along at 10kts.
    The 25 seats up to eight passengers,
    and the 30 up to 12. Owners have so
    far forsaken the comfort of a canopy
    or bimini for the sheer beauty of
    these craft, although they are
    existing options, as are different
    finishes, woods and so on. The
    elegant launches are pictured above
    perfectly at home at Wray Castle.
    The 25 costs £42,000 (+ VAT); the
    27 costs £45,000 (+ VAT) and the
    30 is £48,000 (+VAT).

Mini W yacht

for racing

This is the baby of the W yachts

founded and championed by

Donald Tofias. The first two were

built last year, partly for match

racing, although they stand up as

boats in their own right. The 22ft

10in (6.8m) cold-moulded wooden

sloops are based on the Joel

White-designed Saskonnet 23s, but

with a transom rather than canoe

stern. CB editor Rob Peake recently

had a sail on one and said: “She’s

frisky enough to steer through a

gybe with your feet and has a

responsive and balanced tiller

upwind. There’s more than enough

potential tweaking to keep the

performance sailor occupied, but

the sails are easy to handle and the

22 is a fun boat to potter about in,

seating four adults easily.”

The first two are available at

$200,000 (c£152,000), with further

boats at $225,000 (c£170,958)

with a four-month delivery time.
